S/PDIF Out would be a 75 ohm coax cable / RCA type jacks. I use that out of my comp here to a Denon surround processor (HT setup) I have. That is IMO the easy way to go as you can make your own cables.
I 'm sure they have speaker only setups (Klipsch) that would utilize this type of connection.
You can use the Toslink as well but that uses the fiber optic cable, which you can't make.
Pipe the S/PDIF Out coax into a good HT reciever / speakers and enjoy better sound then ANY computer speaker setup.

No, the s/pdif he is talking about is in optical, look at his mobo.

You hook it right up to the optical input on a speaker system, same for the input, but that is hooked up to the optical output.

If you have a ps2, there is an optical output on the back of that.

so i could look for a 5.1 speaker setup with "optical" hook up...

is that better then using the standard jacks that are also on the MB .. in other words, is it worth an upgrade to probably more expensive speakers... as i am using 4.1 speakers w a subwoofer....

Yep, it does have a little bit better quality, but it is up to you. Mabey if you could sell the ones you have, and buy a new set for a little more...

It'd give you lossless transmission down into the amplifier. That doesn't mean you get better output quality - there are just as many crap speakers and amps with digital input as without it.
