You can put in any micro ATX motherboard in the 2400 or 4600.
What do you plan on doing with a new motherboard? |

| I cannot confirm or refute this statement, but I must admit I am surprised by it. Remember that your Dell copy of Windows XP will not install unless you use a Dell motherboard. The best place, in my experience, to look for info on Dells is the Dell forums.
Don't forget that if you upgrade your motherboard and CPU , you likely will need an upgrade of the cooling for that CPU. Dell has gone to heatpipes and more substantial fans as the speed of their Intel CPU's have gone up. (The latest models have a newer design with multiple fans and more).
Here is an example of one approach to improved cooling in a Dell system: http://www.poweredgeforums.com//showthread.php?t=2094
This is NOT a suggested approach for your 2400. I've just included it so you could see pics to aid in understanding.

Actually, I know a guy that did it with his 2300. http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=902472
You can go check out dell's forums, but the last time I was on there it was full of all kinds of morons that claimed dells were impossible to upgrade, and other crap like that. |

| The same can be said of even Techimo. So carefully consider the source of the comments. Mods seem to generally know some stuff. FWIW, I have also heard that the 4600 trade can be done. |

Lots of 4600 mobos on eBay. Don't pay Dell $150 for this thing. |
