Intel 975x vs Nvidia nForce 680i SLI?

Dear All,

I just joined this community as I was impressed by the depth of knowledge members display on different topics.

I'm planning on upgrading most of my system and I'm thinking of going the 'barebones' route.

Please advise as I'm considering either Intel or Nvidia chipsets.

I live in Lagos, Nigeria and we do not have ready access to high end gaming PCs. So I'm thinking of buying this barebone and a graphics card from Canada through a friend that is travelling. And I will require a lot of future proofing - I hear there is 1333MHz FSB on the way...?

These are a few models I'm considering.

Please let me know if you have any better ideas and also advise on whether Nvidia or Intel.

I'd also like advise on Graphics cards as well as Dual or Quad cores. The aim is to play FSX in all its glory!

Thanks a lot.

I'd personally go for a PC with an Intel P35 chipset or a P965 chipset. The 975Xs date back a while, while the 680is are relatively new. Are you looking into overclocking at all? What about SLI?

Hi there...
I just wanted to point out a couple of things..

1. With most barebone setups, the PSU is the weakest link. Most people don't even think to check the PSU, as long as it comes with one people are happy. I have to say that you need to double check any system your considering to make sure it comes with a decent PSU. I've picked up a barebone from Tiger actually, that came with a 450w PSU, that ended up blowing up and taking multiple hard drives and memory with it. It really sucked! Just make sure if you do pick up the barebone, to either pick up another PSU with it, or at least have it in your budget to "just in case".

2. When you order a barbones package, it normally still comes shipped in separate packages. I've even had the packages arrive on different days. So your friend won't just have one big box with him, he'll still have multiple smaller ones also.

3. Most of the cases that barbones come with are "budget" cases. Not really the best for noise reduction and space really. You may have better luck, just look for the biggest case you can get, especially if you plan on building a gaming/overclock rig.

I myself wouldn't even look at barebones. I like to pick each individual part, so that way I can choose what goes in the system. If I'm spending that kind of money on a new rig, I don't want to compromise on anything..

BUT, out of the packages you listed, I would go with the EVGA 680i package. I'm a fan of EVGA, and also nvidia chipsets. They have always overclocked really nice for me..

Just my two cents..

And Welcome to TIMO

Thanks a lot to you both.

For Him61, of course I'm considering SLi tjhat's why I want the 680.

And Karmakiller, there is no way on earth I'd buy a system or barebone without considering the PSU.

I'm using 700w as the minimum limit - what do you reckon?

Then a 680i board would be your best choice then. Out of those barebones, I'd go with this one:
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...5337&CatId=336
As for a PSU, this is what I would get:

It also depends on what cards you are planning on putting in SLI. What did you have in mind there?

You could probably get away with a PSU that's half the cost of a 700watt depending on what you plan on putting in there, like him said.
I myself picked up a OCZ Gamestream 600w PSU from newegg for $89. It will run anything I can fit in my case.
See what I'm saying..
