Hi paparts. Welcome to TechIMO.
Some questions for you:
Is the new drive recognized in the BIOS?
Is the old drive SATA or PATA (IDE/ATA)?
Are you replacing the old drive or adding the SATA drive as a secondary (slave) drive?
If your old drive is PATA or you are replacing the old drive you probably just need to install the SATA drivers. You can get them in the link below: ASRock Motherboard - Product - P4VM800 - Download

My first HD is not detected by the bios... When I tried to install my other HD, it was detected by the bios but while loading the windows OS my PC turns off. Why is this? |

Hey paparts
I have the same motherboard and I could not get a sata hd to work with it. Yes, I updated the bios and set the csmos to detect the sata, nothing. I even sent back to WD what was probably a perfectly good hd, thinking the drive was bad. Some of the first gen sata mb's did not have all the kinks worked out. I had to get a pci card to hook up the sata. |

Almost right, Biggd, but not quite.
The key here is that drives that support 3 Gbit/s interface do not initialize correctly if put onto a pure 1st generation SATA interface. This is a specification screwup in SATA-II, not any particular device maker's fault.
The trick is to use a drive that has a configuration jumper to make it link up. Samsung's used to have it, so there is hope for you, paparts. |

Try setting the speed limitation jumper on the back of the hard drive.
The link below will show you how it needs to be jumpered. NOTE : SATA 1.5Gb/s Speed Limit Jumper setting Only for SATA 3.0Gb/s products In some rare cases SATA 1.5Gb/s hosts can not establish SATA interface connection with SATA 3.0Gb/s devices due to interface protocol issues. In this case the jumper may be installed as shown on the figure below to force the device to negotiate for SATA 1.5Gb/s speed http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/co...ATA_eng_r4.pdf

I picked up a $20 card at Tiger direct, hooked up the drive to the card, problem solved! |

Brilliant. Spend $20 to avoid reading a one-page PDF that tells you how to solve this for $0 - with pictures. Congratulations.
Thanks for wasting our time >:-(
Oh by the way, PCI SATA cards perform MUCH worse than chipset integrated.
FAIL. |

Peter
Thank you for flaming, again. Perhaps I was not thorough enough in my initial post. I know I tend to be very short. How were you able to determine that paparts was trying to install a 3G sata HD on a 1.5G interface when he/she did not make that determination?
(The fact that the system shut down while trying to load windows?) In my case, I could write you a book with all the steps I took to get my 1.5G HD, I tried 4 differnet cables, I called AS Rock,......etc........ and yes, I even read the PDF file, all to no avail. The sata interface on the board would not see the drive and it's not the only first gen sata board to have this problem. it's well documented. |
