| New Motherboard, New Problems...
I have recently had a bit of a snafu with my computer. I had a BioStar motherboard that fried on me (seems to be their habit...). So I bought a FoxConn board (link below). Newegg.com - Foxconn A78AX-S AM2+/AM2 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard - AMD Motherboards
So I installed it, hooked up all my little toys to it, updated it with windows, blah blah blah. For every other motherboard I've had, this has been it and the computer runs fine. Well, this time it's doing some rather unsettling things. First off, when it starts up I get a black screen that says that windows can not start up because a certain file is missing or corrupt. The file it is speaking of is:
Windows/System32/Config/System
It usually takes a bit of doing before I can "trick" windows into starting up. Once it DOES start up, it runs fine. Just like it always had before. I've found the file that Windows says it can't see, so I know it's there. Course it still could be corrupt...
I've done everything I can think of to make it start up correctly, and I'm down to the motherboard, since it was all that I changed. It also does something strange on shut down. It's like it won't shut down completely. The system fan shuts down as does the monitor, so it APPEARS shut down. Until you notice that the CPU light and the Hard drive light in the front of the case are still on. This has never happened before with my system. Also, when it is in this "half shut down" state, I can not turn the computer back on. I've tried holding down the power button for a hard shut down, but nothing works. The only way I can get it back up and running (in a sense) is to turn off the power supply and turn it back on. This is not normal behavior...
If anyone can give me a tip I would be very appreciative. I would really hate to have to buy yet ANOTHER motherboard... |

Usually you have to install the drivers for the new motherboard. You can't just switch motherboards and expect it to work. Except if the new motherboard has the same chipsets and uses the same drivers as the previous motherboard. |

Swapping MB's without installing Windows is asking for trouble. I'm not sure it works at all for XP and Vista because of licensing. |

I have installed the drivers. That was the first thing I did. I also reactivated Windows (even spoke to them on the phone).
I know you can't just switch out motherboards. I've done this many times before and I've never had a problem like this. The only thing I haven't tried is a "repair" using my original windows set up disk. |
