Chipset question.
What is the worst situation i could end up in if i replace my current motherboard with one that has a different chipset. I have an Asus P5k-e wifi edition with the Intel P35 chipset. If i were to replace my system with a motherboard of a different chipset. What should i expect? I am assuming the chipset would be my biggest problem.

If you are going to keep your old processor, you will need a chipset/socket that will support it.
Same goes for your memory, but if you are getting new memory and CPU any chipset, everything else will work.
You are not stuck with P35, there chipsets in that family that will probably work depending on type of memory and CPUHard Sayin Not Knowin

From a software standpoint, you will most likely need to format your O/S hard drive, then reinstall Windows and all your other programs.

Here is a sampling of boards, many differant chipsets that will work with your stuff.
Newegg.com - Computer Hardware,Motherboards,Intel Motherboards,LGA 775,Core 2 Quad / Core 2 Extreme / Core 2 Duo,DDR2 1066
If you have an OEM copy of XP or newer, you will have to talk to microsoft to validate it, as motherboard replacement is not usually allowed.
Edit:
The P35 is a performance chip, so you should bve looking at the higher end boards for a similar chip.
Look for number of USB ports and if you need fire wire, or mega lan. these are the options you should look at.Last edited by stroyal; August 15th, 2009 at 07:04 PM.

Yeah i was checking those out ealier...I would have perfered an upgrade but i am understanding it does not seem ideal right now. My only question now is. Would using any of these board be pretty much like Plug n play? As in hooking everything together correctly and it will run.

NM i did not read carefully. So my best bet would be to try to find the exact board again, or will that not work as well?

P45 is just the next one up from P35, it will work just fine, even the Nvidia chips will work.

Thank you I know what i am looking for. My only problem is hearing not having the right chipset will not operate correctly if it operates at all. I do not understand what you meant about having the OEM XP disk. I do have one, but why would i need it?

You need a copy of WinXP because you will need to install it once the new motherboard is installed. Windows won't work properly because most of the P35 drivers will be different from the P43/P45 versions.

The only other thing I can think of is that board looks like it had 2-16X PCI-E that that operated at a full 16X together.
Only a few boards/chipsets do that, If you don't need it , it's not a problem.
This one dose it for Nvidia video cards, if you don't need fire wire.

Can you RMA the mobo with Asus? It should have a 3 year warranty on it.

4GB is about the minimum you want for good performance. I kicked up to 8 and I noticed the difference. Especially in games.
