Sound card issue
Hi Guys,
I've got a problem with my sound card. I've recently reinstalled a desktop with windows xp. I don't have a CD for the sound card drivers but I don't know where I should be looking online as to where to download them.
I've run dxdiag and here are the results:

Is this an actual sound card, as in an upgradable expansion card type, or is this an Onboard Audio "sound card"?
if the latter, then it should be as simple as finding the model name/number of the motherboard, and then looking it up on Foxconn's site for the necessary drivers for the onboard audio.
otherwise, if its an expansion card type sound card, do you know what the make and model of the card is, if its a generic no name brand, you could look at the card and find the audio chipset model on the card... usually Realtek, C-media or something like that, though there are other Manufacturers of audio chips as well.i7 940//Corsair H60//EVGA X58 SLI LE//6GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz//2x EVGA GTX 560 Ti FPB SLI//NZXT Hale82 850W//CM 690 II Advanced//Win7 64//WD 74GB V-raptor, 750GB Black, 1.5TB Green

I think it's what you call an onboard sound card. I booted the desktop down and checked to see if the sound card was removable but it's attached to the mother board.
I'm just guessing... Everest comes up with this:

Yep, then that would be Onboard audio (soldered on to the motherboard, in part or in whole, some Mobo Manufacturers utilize an "expansion" card usually in its own dedicated slot for connectors and additional sound processing, but core of the card is actually on the mobo)
anyways, that would be the Mobo Model listed above, one of those 2 model numbers there, I'm guessing its probably a series of boards, using similar configurations but varying options, from low to high feature sets or something.
anyways, looking up one of the models:
they're a bit outdated by 5 years, but here's the download for the drivers for the audio for that board, Foxconn - Support - Downloads
looking up the specs for that mobo, Foxconn - Products: Motherboard
(box on the right has links for drivers, BIOS updates, etc, might come in handy for future driver issues with the lack of a CD for it)
looks like its a Realtek Sound chip, once you get the drivers installed, Everest might be able to reveal more about the sound chips actual model number.
either that, or if you can inspect the motherboard, look for a Chip on the board that says Realtek (might have some type on it saying AC97, might not, if it does, its the sound chip, Realtek also makes Network Interface chips as well)
If you click on the link for that motherboard, and look at the picture provided, click the picture to get a better bigger view, but up in the upper left hand portion of the picture are 2 Chips on the board, one is undoubtedly a Realtek chip (looks like a crab image on the chip), the other looks like it could be as well, one of those two should be the audio chip. Could also be the chip right behind the audio ports as well.
get the chip model number, and you can usually find updated Audio drivers directly from Realtek's Website.
in general for most Realtek Chips, its all the same drivers, just one bundle for all in the series of chips, for the OS your using.i7 940//Corsair H60//EVGA X58 SLI LE//6GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz//2x EVGA GTX 560 Ti FPB SLI//NZXT Hale82 850W//CM 690 II Advanced//Win7 64//WD 74GB V-raptor, 750GB Black, 1.5TB Green

ShyguyXPC,
That's brilliant. Thankyou for taking the time to explain everything and go to the trouble of finding me the link to the right driver.
Unfortunately the second link you provided to do with the motherboard doesn't want to play ball with me.
I'll be sure to give some more feedback when the audio driver is downloaded.
Thanks again!

Yes, that's the motherboard.
I've installed the drivers but nothing! The speakers are plugged in the correct ports...very odd!

might need to configure the audio settings in windows, via Windows Audio settings, and if any 3rd party app was installed in there as well.
its been a long time since I've dealt with Windows XP and its audio settings, at least a year, so I can't remember which settings to look at, but there's usually some combination of sound and recording devices for playback and recording that need to be enabled, etc.
also, there may be some sort of BIOS setting for the motherboard, that needs to be enabled to run the Audio, unless you've made changes to the BIOS since the last OS install, this shouldn't be an issue , but its at least worth a look, and see if the onboard Audio or Audio codec got disabled in the BIOS.
Also, I know its one of those "DUH" things, but if these are powered speakers, make sure their plugged in and have power LOL, I've had a few of those moments in past years myself, only to realize I didn't have them plugged into the wall

36 novels by Chas Dickens, starting with the Old Curiosity Shop. I've only read one or two over the years, and I just got this bug to do it all at once.
