Basic BIOS Settings for AMD ASUS Motherboard
I could be jumping the gun here just a bit, but in an effort to get through my first computer build with as few hitches as possible I figured I'd ask anyways.
I have the following board, and the rest of the components, getting here Thursday, and I am wanting to see what BIOS settings need to be addressed before I install my OS (and/or after if any).
Newegg.com - ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO AM3 AMD 785G HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard
I've got 2x4GB cards coming:
Newegg.com - G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL9D-8GBRL
and will be installing Win7 64-bit. The CPU is the AMD Phenom X4 955.
I've researched it some, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to know which changes are "necessary" and which are for more advanced users that will be O.C. and such - which I don't have any plans of doing.
I have 2 500GB HDD's. One for OS and Programs/Apps, and the other for all my data.
Thanks!

I'd use "jumper free configuration" to get up and running before you start experimenting with settings.
Also, there may be a default "performance settings" choice, also.
Basically, get it running first.Obama: The rich have the Federal Reserve and the poor have Harry Reid... LOL. Life really is unfair!

I think I need to set the SATA Configuration to AHCI, which may be the default anyways. So I shouldn't change any settings before installing the OS, and just use defaults? For some reason I thought I read somewhere that there are a few things that should be done prior to loading the OS, but I may be mistaken.

I need to verify something about the fans, and the manual doesn't help.
Board has 3 fan connections: CPU, Power, and Chassis. The CPU is of course hooked in to the CPU fan. In the Power Fan connector I've plugged in the front 80mm case fan. In the Chassis fan connector I've plugged in the rear 120mm fan.
Is this correct? I do not see anything coming out of the PSU to plug in to any of these, and currently all fans are running:
At idle from BIOS screen:
CPU fan speed: 3750 - 41deg C
Chassis speed: 1165 (rear 120mm fan)
Power fan speed: 1965 (front 80mm fan)
I hope I have it right. I wish the manual was more detailed.

It is just one of those curiosities.
Many boards have a PS fan connector, but very very few power supply fans are powered that way. It doesn't matter what plug you use, except it is good to have the CPU connected to the CPU plug, so the alarm/shutdown works.
The only power supply I have ever had with a connector for the fan, is one I installed the fan myself.
They must exist from the factory, but I have never seen one.
41c is cool for any CPU.Last edited by stroyal; October 8th, 2010 at 03:18 PM.

Pretty much what Chuckie said.
There may be exceptions, depending on the BIOS defaults.
Boot order, and SATA set up sometimes have to be checked and addressed.
Can't help on SATA because they are all different.
I just set up a Dell Demention 8400, last night, I didn't need drivers, but had to set the BIOS to Combination, from the default AHCI for it to be recognized.
My NF7S is totally different.
needs drivers, and a different setting.
I like to take a cruse through the BIOS, to see what's there first, anyway.
Edit;
That reminds me, I have to change it back.
Edit;
Blue screen!
Well that didn't work, Combination it is then!
That works fine.Last edited by stroyal; October 8th, 2010 at 03:52 PM.
