Intel P4 2.8 GHz running at 1.4 GHz on MSI MS-6585 w. 1024 Mbytes DDR Ram.
Even in normal operations, the machine runs very, very slowly and will even lock up completely. Upon shut down, it does something I haven't seen since the old Win98se days... not completely shut down.
CPU-Z tells me that the DRAM frequency is 134.7 MHz, FSB DRAM is 3.4 and CAS Latency is is 2.5 clocks.
I have tried altering the settings in CMOS, but my initial efforts resulted in a completely frozen board. I reset the CMOS and swapped out the HDD, making a fresh install of Win2000 / SP4 and the machine again boots, but will not budge above 1.4 GHz.
I have installed Win2K hotfix, rollup and cumulative updates.
I have installed the MSI IDE drivers and NVIDIA drivers for the AGP add-on video card and Philips audio driver for the Philips add-on audio card.
I have run Norton System Utilities and corrected any conflicts or errors it could spot. This machine has never been on the Net so I doubt that any virus could be an issue.
PSU is an xCase 500W.
No visible swelling, discoloration or painful itching with respect to the capacitors.
Goshdarnit, I want my full 2.8 GHz, and we are not even talking about overclocking.
Is my DDR Ram causing this?
Analysis Spock?
Followup
Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz clocking at 1.8Ghz, need help on making it 2.4 Ghz
Boot screen tells me something on the order of 1.4 GHz Intel / 100 MHz.
Am I missing a jumper to increase the clockspeed?
I cannot find the setup screen which offers the option to set the FSB to 133 and then multiply that by 21 to get close to my rated 2.8 GHz. (Heck, could I do 22?).
Follow up, part Deux:
Found this page, instructive, but focuses mostly on AMD CPU's. May have limited application on Intel chips.

Dude there is no reason to keep bumping your own thread to add info, hit the edit button if you need to add more information.
If you look in the manual it should tell you where to change the FSB settings. The board looks fairly limited on settings but I believe it should be under freq/voltage control and cpu freq.
BTW You may also want to check the msi site for bios updates!Last edited by RicheemxX; December 4th, 2010 at 02:39 AM.

I've looked at the MSI support site, which seems to be pretty darned good, and it has a matrix of supported CPU's:
MSI Global – Computer, Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Mainboard, Graphics and more
CPUID tells me that the CPU is an Intel P4 Northwood 2.80 GHz Core Speed of 1414 MHz, a multiplier of 14, a bus speed of 101 MHz and rated FSB of 400 MHz.
A couple puzzlers remain:
It seems that there are different versions of P4 Northwood CPU's, 2.8 GHz's, some that have an MSI CPU support entry of OK, while others say "NO."
I don't know what else to look for to distinguish in CPUID, one 2.8 GHz Northwood from the other. The MSI matrix seems to support some 2.8's and not others.
The other is what the board is actually doing. Recall that this is a fresh install of Win2000 SP4, updated with the rollups and patches.
Since the machine has just a basic load of application software on it, I have not yet installed internet capability. Thus, I have downloaded drivers and application software onto a USB flash drive and use File Manager NT 32 to click and drag the relevant software to the machine.
Specifically, I would create a directory in C:\ move the software or drivers there, and install it from that directory. Recently, the machine has quit doing even this basic step and locking up completely.
Given that flashing the BIOS is a tricky process on even a good day, I am concerned what may happen if I attempt to flash the BIOS and the machine locks up in mid-stream.
There is enough rated PSU wattage, there is plenty of DDR ram, the CPU is rated at 2.8 GHz, why is this machine acting so unstable and sluggish?
Is there a possible cause and remedy, before trying to update the BIOS?
Given that it is rolling at half its rated speed, would it not be well within its operating envelope and therefore very stable?
What am I missing here?
Thanks in advance.Last edited by kopfjaeger; December 4th, 2010 at 03:46 AM.

Run CPU-Z, dump the results to a text file (about tab), then post the text here.

Your 2.8GHz CPU is probably 14x200, which you motherboard supports provided you have updated to BIOS ver 1.5.
With the CPU bus at 100 MHz, the RAM will automatically run at 133MHz.What computer do you have? And please don't say a white one. - Sheldon Cooper

Have you updated the BIOS to ver 1.5 yet?

December 5th, 2010, 11:21 AM #9There is is your issue. With a fixed multiplier of 14x, it appears you have a Northwood "C" 2.8GHz processor designed for 800FSB* (4x200MHz) operation.Multiplier x FSB 14.0 x 101.0 MHz
Northbridge SiS 648 rev. 02
The SiS648 chipset is designed for 400FSB (4x100MHz) to 533FSB (4x133MHz) operation. Assuming the motherboard even supports overclocking, the Sis648 chipset is likely to peak somewhere around 150Mhz, which would only yield ~2.1GHz with the current processor.
To reach the desired frequency, you will need a compatible 400FSB or 533FSB processor offering a higher fixed multiplier, such as a Pentium 4 28x100MHz or 21x133MHz to reach 2.8GHz.

Oops, I looked at the CPU support list incorrectly. That is a 14x200 (800qdr) CPU and it isn't supported by any BIOS version.

In other words, they need a new Motherboard with a compatible Chipset to reach the desired 2.8GHz Stock speed.
Or as Rob mentioned a Compatible CPU with the Current motherboard.i7 940//Corsair H60//EVGA X58 SLI LE//6GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz//2x EVGA GTX 560 Ti FPB SLI//NZXT Hale82 850W//CM 690 II Advanced//Win7 64//WD 74GB V-raptor, 750GB Black, 1.5TB Green

A-HA!
So what you are saying, if I understand correctly, is that this SiS-based board, will never be able to fully support a 2.8 GHz CPU?
BTW - last night I downloaded and deployed MSI's FuzzyLogic (4) utility. You can learn more about it by downloading the PDF instruction manual for this board, the MSI MS-6585, aka the '648 Max.' Ideally, with FuzzyLogic (4) you should be able to get the CPU information and adjust the clock speed.
While it seems to give you a means to change the CPU core voltage, I preferred not to mess with that since I am not an expert in this field. On the other hand, it gave another icon which seemed to alter the FSB speed, which was defaulting to 100 MHz.
I goosed it to 133, which combined with the default multiplier of 14, gave me a little over 1.8 GHz, which is still incredibly low. I could not see how I could otherwise change the multiplier. Indeed, the icon for 'multiplier' simply toggled the number 14 on or off, but gave you no means of increasing that from 14 to any other number.
Finally, I have a small number of P4 CPU's at different speeds, ranging, if I recall correctly, from 1.7 GHz to 2.8 GHz.
Given the MSI Supported CPU matrix, which is the fastest I can get a supported CPU without great overclocking?
For instance, if I take out the 2.8 GHz CPU and replace it with -- for example -- a 2.0 GHz, would that make more sense?
If so, can I increase the FSB speed in any increments, or must they simply be 100 / 133 / 166?
Gents, I have to thank all of you for your suggestions.
Best,
K.J.

Other than a few engineering samples, the bulk of Pentium 4 processors have locked multipliers. You will have to clock the processor via FSB.
If you have a 400FSB P4 processor available, preferably with a high multiplier, there is decent chance it will overclock to 533FSB with default processor voltage and moderate cooling.Robert Richmond | Infinite perceptions. One reality.

Interesting!
What should I look for to tell me whether one of the P4 CPUs that I have is a 400 FSB P4 processor?
Secondly, when you say 'overclock to 533 FSB' does that mean if I were to open the FuzzyLogic (4) utility and I am looking at an initial default FSB setting of 100, I can ratchet it up to 533 without hurting anything?
I noticed, with a little alarm, than when I first opened FuzzyLogic (4), the Left Panel indicated the current setting of the CPU at 1.4 GHz. The font was a cool, cool blue.
The default FSB setting was 100. I increased the FSB to 133, after which the font for the CPU settings when from a cool, cool blue at 1.4 GHz to a bright red at 1.8 GHz and change.
The core voltage remained pretty much constant and the temperature did not go above the halfway mark.
Thanks once again. I do seem to be learning from this session.

Look through your processors for the highest clocked 400FSB or 533FSB model you can find and give it a try. You can check Intel processor specs here....
ARK | Your source for information on Intel® products
...or just drop a Google search for the core model number on the chip. The model number will offer a wealth of technical info about the chip.
Often works. The P4 "Northwood" family was decent for overclocking, even at stock voltage, and your board is rated for 533FSB stability. If you have a 400FSB processor with a high multiplier, you might be able to overclock it to a 533FSB for a rather nice frequency boost.Secondly, when you say 'overclock to 533 FSB' does that mean if I were to open the FuzzyLogic (4) utility and I am looking at an initial default FSB setting of 100, I can ratchet it up to 533 without hurting anything?Robert Richmond | Infinite perceptions. Thanks very much!
The link you gave me opens up to this when I select P4.
Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor Family
Now I have a reference to establish just how far I can go to get the most performance out the the processor. Also, anyone having the same problem henceforth can reference this information as well.
Thanks to all of you Gents and special thanks to RobRich.

POST SCRIPT
I've swapped out the Intel Pentium 4 / 2.80 GHz / 512/ 800 Malay for a Pentium 4 2.00 GHz / 512 /400 / 1.5V (Philippines). Upon POST it automatically recognized the processor as 2.0 GHz (Woot!). Thereafter, I the ran FuzzyLogic(4) utility and goosed the FSB to 140 MHz. This prompted an error and locked the system, which restored itself to the default upon reboot.
I ran the utility again, upping the FSB to a more modest 133 MHz and that has given me 2.66 GHz, without an apparent increase in core voltage or running temperature.
Lastly, I noticed with this CPU the multiplier was 20 as opposed to 14 on the previous CPU.
I will assume that this is as much as I can get out of this old board without unduly stressing the system, and will see if I can find one of the rare socket 478 boards which can still be found for sale.Last edited by kopfjaeger; December 6th, 2010 at 12:21 AM.
