What is your budget?
I think the 988 only comes in LGA1366, so those boards start $150 and go to at least $400
They have triple channel memory, so you have to buy them in 3s
That level of boards, and CPUs has no cost effective solutions, as you are paying through the nose for the top of the line.
Notice that the top 2 or 3 CPUs are always 3 times higher than the rest of the line, and they are usually only a little faster.
In this case 6 cores would be great, if anything used it.
The 978 goes for over $1000
A well thought out LGA1156 with a slightly slower CPU wouldn't blow your socks off, and cost half as much,(maybe 1/4 as much) and be almost as fast.
But if you need it give us a budget.

980x is the top i7 six core (not including the 990x which is not out for mass consumers).

Pacific Rim does look pretty good. I'd like to see 'Man of Steel' too.
