Is my Gateway NV5927U laptop dead?

I purchased a Gateway NV5927U laptop at Best Buy early last year when they had a great deal on it. Anyhow, it really hasn't given me any major problems up until last month. The battery died out on me at the end of last year and I have been using the adapter as the power source since then.

About a month ago I tried turning on my laptop one morning and nothing happened. I saw that the light on the adapter was out so I figured that I needed a new one. I went to Best Buy and got myself a rocketfish adapter that worked with the laptop. About a week later, it happened again. This time, though, the light was lit on the adapter. I took it to Best Buy where the Geek Squad guy tested the adapter. It worked with another laptop, just not mine. He then tried another adapter with my laptop but it didn't work. He told me the motherboard was probably dead. Is there anything I can do to find out if that is the real problem? Is there any hope for my laptop? Or is it time to invest in a newer, better laptop?

A real common problem with lapppys is that the ac plug attached to the mobo breaks off. Sometimes if you giggle the cord you can make it make a connection.

Some of these plugs can be re soldiered - other times you have to replace the mobo.
