the 500W thing for the video card is TOTAL SYSTEM power, not what the video card itself uses, there is NO current video card on the market for consumers that uses more than 400W. as far as Single GPU cards, there are none that use 300W, anything over this amount are Dual GPU cards.
the 520W is MORE than enough to power a system as I listed, but if you were to run a 2nd one of those Video cards, you would probably want a bit more power, a 600-650W.
the key besides the brand names, and quality, is the amount of Wattage or Amp Rating for the +12V Power Rail on the Power supply. That Seasonic has a 40A +12V rating, thats 480W of its 520W rating that can be devoted to the +12V Power, which is what the video card uses, and most of todays PC's use the +12V rail as well for other components, borrowing from the other 2 older Rails (3.3 & 5V) for extra power as needed.
as to the Seasonic, I listed it as it was priced right on newegg with Free Shipping (3 items are killers for Shipping, Power Supplies due to weight and Cases/Monitors due to size and weight issues), for $60 with Free Shipping its a Good deal since Seasonic almost always carries a price premium over the other brands (also because Seasonic Makes units for other brands like Antec, Corsair & others as well, so their own brand will carry an even higher price tag versus the same units that are sold under the other names). Silverstone is another brand that carries a high price premium usually, though they don't make their own PSU's.
PC Power & Cooling is another Premium Brand, and are usually priced even higher than Seasonic's. There's an on going "battle" between which is the Cream of the Crop, Seasonic or PC P&C for years now, but I would vote for Seasonic, since their the ones that actually MAKE the units others like PC P&C sell (At least some of PC P&C's units are redesigned Seasonics, but they also have a long history of Industry Firsts to back them up as well, so you can see why there's an on going battle between the 2 brands).

If you were to throw in a 2nd 6870 you would probably want something like this: Newegg.com - Antec High Current Gamer Series HCG-750 750W ATX12V v2.3 / EPS12V v2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Certified 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply
has 4 PCIe Power connectors which is what you'd want in a PSU with the intent of running Dual cards at the level of the 6870.
some other options: Newegg.com - CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX750 V2 750W ATX12V v2.31/ EPS12V v2.92 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC High Performance Power Supply
Newegg.com - OCZ OCZ750FTY 750W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Power Supply
Newegg.com - OCZ ZS Series OCZ-ZS750W 750W ATX12V v2.2 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Performance Power Supply
Newegg.com - PC Power and Cooling Silencer Mk II 750W High Performance 80PLUS Silver SLI CrossFire ready Power Supply
This one would be your best bet, has the proper connections, and though 650W compared to the others above (which you don't need 750W for a dual 6870 setup, 600-650 is all you would need at most), its priced decently too, plus XFX is one of the best brands for Radeon cards, plus good PSU's.
Newegg.com - XFX P1-650X-CAH9 650W ATX12V v2.2 / ESP12V v2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply
though its out of stock currently. But its also a Modular cable PSU, so you'd be able to store away unused cables and only need to use the ones you actually need.
Otherwise, the Non Modular variant IS in stock for a dollar more: Newegg.com - XFX Core Edition PRO650W (P1-650S-NLB9) 650W ATX12V 2.2 & ESP12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply
It'd also be the best deal of all of them IMO.
But for a single GPU/Card system, the 520W Seasonic will be plenty for your needs.
Well I have everything ordered now so some time next week I'll let you know how it turned out. I appreciate all your help shy and stroyal. thanks.
Your welcome.
I'll be watching, I won't be able to upgrade for a while, so I live vicariously through you guys.
I just noticed the graphics card you recommended has two 6pin connectors on it. The power supply you recommended only has one 6 pin connector and one 6+2 pin(what is that?)
Do I need a different supply or is one 6pin enough? Im worried I bought the wrong one now.
The 6+ 2, can be used as a 6 pin, or an 8
You can always buy an adapter anyway, not to worry.
Edit,
Some cards, come with an adapter.
that's a relief, if i hadn't used ebay(yea yeah you were right) it would of came with an adaptor. but the manual said not to use one(wierd that they supply one and say not to use it.)
thanks for the response stroyal
