Motherboard with dual processors
Hello TechIMO community, I am looking at building a powerful PC before I go to college next year.
Half the reason is so that I can play any video game on the market and so that I can do my school work on it, etcetcetc.
On the other half I want to be able to host a server on it with games such as Minecraft, Terraria, Garrys Mod, and Team Fortress 2. I also want to be able to record the games to be put onto youtube. Also I may be running a 24/7 website on it or near 24/7 on it.
Therefore after looking at this general list of what I want to do, I need to know if a dual processor motherboard would be a practical approach. I have never dealt with these types of motherboards before so I thought I would ask TIMO. Also if you could recommend processors to go along with it then that would be great. Otherwise I will be visiting the processor section of the TIMO community and go from there.
Any recommendations to go along this system would be very helpful such as if I should consider different cooling systems(water cooling for example), types of thermal pastes I should use, hard drives that look great(I am looking to put at least 2 TB on this), also RAM and other things that I need.
Also I want to dual boot Windows 7 64 bit and Ubuntu 64 bit, so if you can make sure they are compatible with both systems that would be great.
I don't care about prices right now, I just want to look into a ballpark range of how much I am going to need to gather. As long as the parts are reliable.
Thanks ahead of time.Acer 7720zMicrosoft Windows XP(SP3)2GB RAM1.44Ghz Intel Dual Core Processor DvdR Drive 160gb HDD 500gb Seagate HDD(External)

Honestly I'd consider 2 separate PC's, a good gaming PC, and then maybe a smaller server for the website or game servers.
this way, if while your gaming, you experience any lock ups or freezes or errors due to games, like we all have, it maintains your website on the other PC so that isn't affected, same with hosting a game server if its a dedicated server and not a play and serve type server.
What kind of school work are you going to be doing on it?i7 940//Corsair H60//EVGA X58 SLI LE//6GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz//2x EVGA GTX 560 Ti FPB SLI//NZXT Hale82 850W//CM 690 II Advanced//Win7 64//WD 74GB V-raptor, 750GB Black, 1.5TB Green

Your requirements aren't gonna be feasible for your 24/7 requirements. Between the random lock-ups, dual booting, and updates your websites/game server will be going up and down based on your machine. Plus the other thing you need to take into consideration is security, having public servers and having personal data is something you shouldnt be doing

Ok then, so what do you suggest as far as security? I understand that I won't be able to have it up 24/7 between lock ups, so I am going to go with Shyguys idea of seperating it into two systems. However, as far as the server goes, what should I have in it? I want itto be able to at least run a website and a 24/7 game server host.
Also, would I have a better bet running the server off of Ubuntu? I know they have great server utilities.Last edited by videoman1994; March 9th, 2012 at 06:39 PM.

It all depends on how comfortable you are with Ubuntu/Linux.
What kind of connection will you be running off this? That is another thing to take into consideration when it comes to running websites/game servers on it. You need to look at the recommend specs for machines running game servers and if they are linux/ubuntu compatible (im sure they are but its just something else you need to look at)

The website and server is only meant to hold a couple people. Possibly it will expand.
I am going to be up at college with this computer(s) and will probably buy a decent network to host the server on. What kind of connection would you recommend?Acer 7720zMicrosoft Windows XP(SP3)2GB RAM1.44Ghz Intel Dual Core Processor DvdR Drive 160gb HDD 500gb Seagate HDD(External)

I have no idea what is available to you in your country nor the amount of visitors/users you are expecting to be able to access this server.

is the site intended to just be a basic forums type site, or a regular website with pictures, various pages, etc?
if the former, there are some free basic websites that host basic forums with various templates and even let you customize them.
I'm assuming the Website is probably geared towards the gaming server stuff as well?
I'm not sure how reliable they are, but I have looked into doing something similar for a few games I play.

All I saw was Norway, I didn't see the rest. Either way every area offers something different. He is gonna have to do the research on what the bandwidth and the cost are for connections in his area.
