    Now what did i do?

    Alright kids. Here's the story.
I bought one of those Abit KG7's from this thread. I went to a local shop and picked up an AMD 1700XP, Volcano 7+, and a stick of generic 256M RAM. Put it all together then fired it up. I then realized I was supposed to put an older CPU in there and flash the BIOS when I saw the 1700 come up as a 1100......but it started right up. Right away I flashed the BIOS following the directions given by ABIT. I rebooted and everything looked great. I went into the BIOS to check the settings. Everything looked fine. Temp @ 49deg F, set the clock, thought it must be Miller Time. Keep in mind, at this point all that was in the machine was the MB, CPU, RAM, video card, and a floppy drive. I figured I should run simmtester to make sure the generic RAM is up to snuff. I start it from bootup, it runs half a cycle and then stops. I try again. Same result. the most I got was 3.5 cycles before it would stop running. The whole machine would lock up. This is where everything goes to he11. I really wanted to run the machine so I put in the hard drive, DVD, CDRW, sound, and ethernet cards. Power up...no boot. Repeat a couple of times to make sure. So I break it all back down. I pulled everything out of the case and bench tested just the MB CPU, RAM and video card on the antistatic wrap the MB came in. NO boot. I put a 1Ghz Duron in to see if I toasted the CPU. It boots...then quits. it won't do it again. The Duron is now toast. It won't boot in the machine it came from.
    Did I fry 2 CPU's on 1 bad board?

    Update:
I know traffic on the boards is a little light on the weekends so I thought I'd do a little more troubleshooting. I took a Duron 750 and put in. I used the stock HSF. Powered up on the table and viola! POST. Cool, let's try the 1G Duron and see if it has magically resurrected itself. NOGO. Bummer. I know the 1700XP is fried because of that little burn mark by the core. Could I have hooked up that Volcano 7+ wrong? That is the only thing different between last night and this morning.

Quite possible trav. Those later AMD's are very heat sensitive, and mounting a HDF wrong can kill 'em quick. A few seconds in the case of an XP - did you ever see the Tom's Hardware video?

The Volcanos are very hard to fit right - if you didn't push the clip so hard it almost broke it prolly wasn't on right. And did you have any heat conductive paste between the HSF and the CPU? Or just a pad?

Sounds like a bit of bad luck.

    Commiserations.
    Mick

You were right Mick. The shroud on the fan was interfering with the clip. The HSF was only sitting on 1/2 the core. I fixed that with some tin snips. By the way, I've gotta give props to the shop I bought the CPU from. Infotech I took it back to them this morning and the guy at the counter said that I couldn't exchange it because it had physical damage. Then he leaned over the counter and whispered, "But they would do it anyway if you were an irate customer." I told him that he probably wouldn't want that because I'm very good at being the customer from hell. (The id10ts @ Dairy Queen know me and that guy at Best Buy that always tries to mark my receipt knows me too.)
I got the CPU, dropped it in after CAREFUL inspection of the HSF contact and it has been running simmtester flawlessly for 4 hours. Once I get the case ready (mod in a 120mm fan), I'll give it a home and see how it does at Folding (place recruitment blurb here)

The Volcano 7 and 7+ have a small tin shroud that mounts between the fan and the heatsink that directs the air down lower into the heatsink, thereby increasing the cooling efficiency of the heatsink.

    LOL!

Glad you got it straightened out, trav. The XP's will burn up in the blink of an eye if...well, I guess I'm preaching to the choir.
