| Onboard video/graphics card
I have a PCChips M598LMR that I am trying to turn off the onboard video. Want to install a GeForce 2 64 mb graphics card in the pci slot. There is not a jumper, nor am I able to do it in the bios. It doesn't boot (no beeps, nothing) with the card in. I tried removing, reinserting; I think it is seated fully. The bios only indicates that I can change the video source (pci or agp) which I changed, and the size of the graphics( 4mb, 32mb, 64mb etc). It doesn't allow me to disable the onboard video. Am I able to install a graphics card? In a previous post that I added to PeterM said (I was told to start a new thread):
(The integrated VGA doesn't disable. It's multi display capable and remains enabled even when you add a PCI VGA. All you get to choose in BIOS is which one becomes the primary display.)
So does that mean I am unable to add a card? Could updating drivers help? |

Try this:
Boot up in windows using the build in card.
Go to Device Manager in Control Panel and uninstall it the video card.
Shut off the PC. Don't restart else it'll get detected.
Plug in the new card.
Restart.
If this doesn't work, I'm pretty sure there's a jumper setting-either on the MB or thru BIOS which you need to adjust. | |

There isn't a jumper, not able to disable in bios. I have dual boot, win98/w2k. Do I need to do this in both?
I thought of this,
- I currently have the onboard (sis) video drivers installed. should I go to device mgr and disable them, remove them, and install the standard vga driver? Do in both win's?
- Does any of this need to be done in safe mode?
I have been reading every forum I could find for a couple of weeks looking for advice. |

A 64MB PCI card? Sure it's not AGP? Try setting the "shared" on-board video mem to zero in the BIOS. I've heard that removing the mem stick from the #1 slot (which is where the on-board gets it's mem) can also work. |

Shared video mem does not go to 0, lowest setting is 4mb. I will try the mem stick move and see what happens. ....back in a flash... |

hmm, no luck.
Moved the mem stick to slot 2 and inserted pci card in both slots (1&2), won't even make a noise. Took out pci card and it attempts to boot, but no onboard video so the screen made a noise as if getting video, but black(although you could see some residue of light).
I reinserted the pci videocard in slot 1 but didn't screw it in and noticed it had some leeway. When I booted it I just moved it a hair to see if it wasn't connecting and it shut the pc down. Got a bad mobo or card? |

Hi Lindy!
I had the same board that you do some time ago.! I replaced the built in SiS620 or 530 (don't remember ) with a Voodoo 3 2000 pci card.!
All that you have to do is to go to windows, disable the card in the System properties (like shahani says).
Then, enter the BIOS (still using the same built-in card) and where it lets you specify the primary adapter, CHOOSE PCI!!!! not AGP!!!
Now, insert the PCI card, plug your monitor into the PCI card. Remove the AGP connecter and... there you have it.! It should work cause that's the way I did it and it ran well for two years.!
GOod luck

I tried that. Would not even boot up with that PCI card in. I took the case in to work and had the hardware guys take a look and they have no clue. Do you think I could have a bad slot, or card? I lost my mouse in the process and that is why it took me so look to post. It is almost impossible to surf w/o a mouse! I have a serial hooked up now. I think I will just take their advice and get a new mobo. I have an old AT model and can upgrade to an ATX for not much. Thanks much for your help. |

A) PC Chips mobo's SUCK.
B) Usually with those systems, when in the BIOS it asks to start PCI or AGP first, AGP = onboard, and PCI = card in PCI slot, so if you set the setting to PCI, that usually takes care of it.
Can you try the video card in another computer?

I will try the card in another computer. So you say PCChip mobo not your favorite? I was looking at a PCChips Duron 1200xp w/onboard modem. Got a suggestion for a mobo? Nothing fancy, just want to surf and let my 6 yo and 21 yo play games. (boy that is both ends of the gaming world!) |
