| Is there single CPU AMD MOBO's that have AMD chipsets ??
Hey there,
My first time on this FORUM ....nice to meet everyone.
Now down to business. I have an MSI K7T-Turbo (LITE) that
I am almost sure is dying . It will only install 98SE and even
then it runs bad. I did the usual stuff pull cards out try one
at a time. I even tried new PSU, ram, video card and such.
MOBO and CPU is the only factors left. My CPU looks great.
No burn marks or chips at all. The MOBO I believe to be the
prob. What I need to know is this. The only AMD chipset
boards are those for the Athlon MPs. I don't want 2 CPU's.
I would really like to stick with my T-Bird 900 or get an XP 1800+.
I have looked. Is there ANY BOARDS that offer the AMD chipsets
other than the MPs. I totally believe that who better to design
a chipset for a CPU than those who MAKE the cpu.
Thanks
SladeZero

not anymore. amd only released the chipset to give mobo manufacturers something to work with til VIA and SIS got their chipsets ready. it was only temporary and in fact went on longer than planned even.
any particular reason you want the AMD chipset? my recomendation is to go with a VIA chipset, they tend to be the most stable and there are a lot of VIA boards to choose from. really and truley VIA chipsets out perform the AMD chipsets. besides, the AMD chipset doesn't support DDR ram if i remember right, only SD (if it does, it only supports pc2100, i know that for sure).
oh and WELCOME TO TechIMO!!!!! |

| Yea...been using VIA and don't really care for them
Hey there,
Basically I have had certain probs with VIA. My friend has an
INTEL chipset board with a P3 750. It runs great. Maybe Intel is
just lucky but my reasoning is they know how there CPUs run and
are the BEST people to design chipsets for them. I thought
maybe if AMD was doing the same I would get lucky ....

sorry to dissapoint. AMD hasn't made a chipset in like a year and a half or two. in fact they've only made one chipset in the last 5 years, (possibly ever even, not too sure about before though, so i won't assume). sometimes that's true about chipmakers, but not as much as you would think. via and amd are very close, and so the chipsets tend to be really good actually. i've had really good experience with VIA before, sorry to hear you haven't. as for the Intel board, basically Intel is just like that. AMD isn't. if you don't like VIA, then go with SIS. both chipsets tend to run about the same performancel. IMO VIA is just a little bit more stable.
EDIT: oh and let me guess, problems with a sound blaster right? i will admit, VIA and sb's don't get along as well as they should, one reason i use turtle beach. |

First off, welcome to TechIMO
Anyways, AMD, for as long as I remember doesn't like making chipset for boards. They only started making chipsets because they needed something to launch with, and wanted third party manufacturers to take over the chipset manufacturing. (Such as Via, Sis, etc.) Because of this, most of the AMD chipsets are out of date, since they havent updated them since the 760 series. This includes the 761 and the 762. The latter which is for dual CPU configurations. The 761 series is pretty much gone, and the 762 stuck around since no other third party manufacturer has come out with a Dual Athlon solution.
The 761 is outpaced and out-featured by The Sis735, 745, Via KT266a and the KT333. Since the Hammer already has good support from third-party manufacturers, it's doubtful that AMD will come out with another chipset for a while, expect for multi CPU configurations.
If you still want an AMD chipset single CPU board, even though it's a bit old now, you would need to find a board with the AMD760, which I believe has been out of production for a while. You'd be hard pressed to find one, but theres a few stragglers on www.pricewatch.com - Just type AMD760 in the searchbox and see what comes out. If you intend to order from one of these resellers, make sure to cross-reference them with www.resellerratings.com to make sure they are a reputable company before you order. |

You can still get boards with the AMD 760 North Bridge, but as far as I know, they are all "hybrids" that use the VIA South Bridge.
If you don't like the VIA chipsets - take a look at the nVidia N-Force chipset boards, or the SIS 735 chipset boards. Those are both great platforms to build on. |
