How many cables do you need I purchased two. One rounded 18 inch IDE 3 connector and one rounded floppy cable. Can I hook a dvd-rom up with the hard drive or do I need another cable.

1 cable is fine.
set the hd as master and DVD as slave.
the jumpers will show you what to select.--- Standby to receive our transmission ---

Your hard drive or drives go on the "Primary" IDE".Put your dvd-rom,cd-rom or cd-rw on the "secondary" IDE.Remember to put one as master and one as slave on each IDE cable.
"Not fast enough,
anyway here is my setup.
Primary- 2 hard drives, master has the operating system.
Secondary- cdrw master,cd-rom slave.Last edited by mad1; August 9th, 2002 at 08:18 PM.

MrF:
You'll need another IDE cable for your hard drive. Don't put your DVD on that same Primary IDE channel as your HDD - it will slow your hard drive/system down. Better to make the DVD the Slave
on the Secondary IDE, with your CD-ROM or CD-RW as the Master
on that channel,( unless your DVD or CD-RW mfr suggests otherwise ).
Also, regarding your HDD cable, make sure it is compatible w/your
HDD, i.e., if you have a new ATA/UDMA 133 HDD, you'll want to make sure you get a cable that is also rated as 133,(as opposed
to sticking an old cable on, that you may have lying around).
Hope this helps.

Ok I understand that you have to set the hard drive as master and dvd rom as slave if they are using the same cable.
However if you if you put the hard drive on one cable and the dvd on the other wouldnt both need to be set as master.

One the cable which, master or slave device, should be connected to the cable first( after the connection is made to the motherboard).

There will only be two drives the Hard drive and the dvd drive so both should be set as master on their respective channels.

OK, you only have one HDD and one DVD-ROM, like Mad says, and you confirmed.

If you have a dvd-rw it would be master on the secondary..then if you also had a cd-rom for burning disk to disk, it would probably go as slave on the primary.

I'd follow mfr's recommendation on where to put it - I'd put it as
Master on the Secondary channel,otherwise. . .

John:
Wouldn't that config degrade your HDD speed, unless your HDD and CD-ROMs were SCSI?
For IDE,I guess it's the trade-off that you have to make. Better
all around to have a RAID mobo, so each could be on its own
channel,from a pure performance perspective. . .Last edited by bill1971; August 9th, 2002 at 08:31 PM.

MrF:
You were asking about a combo drive the other day. I noticed that
Newegg had the Toshiba for $85 W/free shipping. Thought I'd pass it on while we're here, and you're talking about Newegg. . .

I don't have a Frye's here, but if BestBuy or CompUSA have them,
they will be at a premium price. I found an excellent variety of
those rounded cables at www.case-mod.com

I already tried Best Buy and CompUsa
I already tried those for the slim IDE cables and they don't have them.

I got my rounded cables from www.bestbyte.net
Here's the link to cables. They have pretty good prices, better than at the B&M stores.
