AMD Athlon XP1800
Jetway 830-CH mobo (just bought)
256Mb PC133 RAM
Just built this unit and am already pulling out my remaining hair. First boot - got repeated rapid beeps and a screen message saying "CPUFAN does not function properly" the fan is fine, but I replaced it anyway - same result. I cleared the CMOS with the jumper and booted again - it booted to "Checksum error - defaults loaded" ok but when I entered the BIOS to change some settings and rebooted, I got the beeping and the error message again. Seems that if I clear the CMOS it will boot but if I change anything (or even enter the BIOS and don't change anything) it fails on reboot. I tried pressing F1 to continue after getting the Checksum error message and tried installing Windows XP but it locked up while copying files.
I've tried running at 100MHz and 133MHz, no difference.
Any thoughts anyone? |

Is the CPU fan plugged into a mobo header or into the power supply harness. Some mobos monitor the CPU fan RPM's and will give you this error if the fan isn't hooked to the mobo. You may be able to disable this in your bios settings if you want.

Good call Xeroid. And if it is in fact plugged into the motherboard header - that header may be blown. This is always fun, as the BIOS is still expecting a reading from it - so if this is the case, you'll need to disable the monitoring setting within your BIOS. |

Fan is connected directly to the mobo

OK, I've disabled the fan shutdown feature and got the PC booted. Now, however, it will run for a while but locks up when it's under any kind of strain - eg.running a self-extracting zip file.
It seems to run fine with the clock speed at 100MHz, but when I change it to 133MHz it locks up after a while. I've swapped the RAM but that didn't help. |

Go into your CMOS SETUP/PC Health and write down your temps. Post back what they are. Also, while in CMOS SETUP you might want to go into Load Fail-Safe Defaults and save changes. Run it that way for a while and report back.
Mike EDIT: also, which OS? Was this a clean install of the OS? Have you tried loading the Via 4-in-1's?

CPU is running at around 39-40 Deg C which should be fine. I've run it at 100MHz for a good while and it's fine. The O/S is Windows XP Pro, clean install. RAM passed Memtest86 with no errors reported. The mobo is based on the Sis730SE chipset so VIA drivers are no use. In the end I've swapped the mobo for a Gigabyte GA-7VKMLS and so far so good - have to get an RMA for the Jetway I suppose. |
