Unhappy Winbond Hardware Monitor on Biostart MB

I recently bought a Biostar M7VIT, an Athlon XP 2000+ and 2 256 meg sticks of Kingston DDR2700 from newegg.com (they rock)! I put the components from my other computer into the new one and for several days everything was running great, however the hardware monitoring program now tells me that the cpu temp is
-48C and when I tried Motherboard Monitor 5, it said my cpu temp is -54C? What's up with that? After rebooting, the BIOS tells me the temp is between 39C and 41C, which is obviously more reasonable and probably correct because my Volcano 6 Cu+ keeps it nice and cool. My computer is running greate besides this one "glitch." Has anyone seen anything weird like this before? I reset the CMOS just to see if anything happened, took out my DDR2700 RAM and swapped slots, and finally for kicks, I took everything apart, put it back together, and reinstalled Windows XP. Same problem. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I know that on my gigabyte board that has a winbond sensor chip, there are a few different sensors that have extremely weird temps. In MBM5 some of the sensors tell me negative numbers, while one is stuck at like 127C or something. Three of the sensors in the list have normal numbers though. Two being the cpu's (it's a dualie) and the other being the system temp. I just disregard the other numbers.

I would suggest playing around with the sensors and seeing if any of them actually have "normal" readings in the 40 or 50 degrees celcius range for the cpu and in the 20 to 30 celcius range for the system.

Thanks for the info. I will look into it. It's not a major issue (weird one though), but just enought of a pain to keep me wondering! There always seems to be one thing that happens!

I picked up the M7VIT at newegg as well and the WinBond Hardware Doctor always shows -48C as you said, Tarp. I think that part of the software is bogus.

Did you download the Warpspeeder software from the Biostar.com.tw website? At least it appears to be accurate, I usually run about 55C on my 2000+XP with the retail fan AMD ships (to get the 3 year warranty). Did you even try the original fan and if so, is the Volcano an improvement?

I need a new case to get better airflow as my mini ATX has the power suppy installed vertically about 2 inches from the CPU. That was OK with the old PII setup but not with the hi-wattage AMD. I've been told you have almost the equivalent of a 60 watt lightbulb in there, so stay COOL!

Have you tried any overclocking with your setup? I won't try until I get the new case but expect to run 6MHz over with no problem. The Warpspeeder makes it easy to OC by testing and verifying stability for you .

I have had the same problems with my software. I had those same numbers 127, and -54, i also had one that was 260*F and i know these are ridiculous because the PC would have fried at that temp. Maybe a driver error?? I also tried using Winbond HW doctor, and i am stuck at 92C for the CPU?? WTF! Thats almost boiling!
