| Processor mystery Help??
I love this forum. I just know someone will be able to help. I have recently purchased what I believed to be an Athlon XP 2100+ processor along with one of those K7S5A boards a new PSU 300 Watt power supply and case. The machine I gutted was an oldish Compaq and I managed to salvage a cd rom drive and dvd which seems to be working fine appart from the fact the motherboard thinks its running an Athlon XP1500+ have I done something wrong do I need to update the BIOS or configure something differently. I couldnt possibly have received an XP1500 by mistake the box had XP2100+ all over the show
or are these mistakes common? |

Is it set to FSB set correctly? It should be 266. |

You'll need to set the Front Side Bus to 133 (266) inorder for it to register as a 2100+. It appears it isnt autodetecting correctly. |

Assuming its been setup correctly in the bios, then I see two possible scenarios.
(1) You can update your motherboard bios to the most current version. Its possible that the board doesn't recognize or display your processor speed properly.
(2) You actually did get a XP1500+ CPU in a XP 2100+ box. Mistakes in stocking and packaging can and do happen. Probably more so at a computer show where things are often unpackaged for display.
As the others have indicated above though, you need to ensure that the FSB speed is set correctly first.

No. Any Athlon XP is supposed to be run on 133 MHz bus. Just do it.
(But be prepared to swap out the 300W power supply against something bigger. Not too many of those are up to the job of feeding an Athlon XP 2100 - what's the total combined output on 3.3V and 5V?) |
