The ALi chipset

I've been offered a used Asus A7A266 (ALi Magik1) by a friend. I see this as a potential cheap upgrade to my current system (Asus A7V-E (VIA KT133)) that would provide me with upgradeability to Athlon XPs and DDR memory.

I read a few reviews and done a couple of searches and I'd like to know opinions of people who have (or had) this board or one with the same chipset.

Also, I noticed the ALi chipset doesn't seem to be developed anymore, anyone knows why ?

I have this board and the AGP driver is is terrbile for it.

1) I made my ti4200 run choppy in every game
2) Made my TV card freeze my computer

These are documented issues and the beta AGP drivers are better but fixed neither of these issues for me. The Ali is the reason that I upgraded. Just couldn't take it anymore.

hmmm, i don't know about ali and am assuming they aren't good from jkrohns post... but the 266 is supposed to be very good i had an epox one myself. I liked it very much, but it's your choice on the ali.

I don't think I'd use another ALi chipset after my experience with the Aladdin V chipset.

I'm not sure how much of a performance increase you'd see.. The KT133 was a pretty good chipset and the Magik1 was one of the first DDR chipsets.

Well, I think I'll forget it.

I went to the Asus website and discovered that in order to use Athlon XPs or Morgan core Durons (like my 1300), you must have PCB rev 1.11. My friend's is 1.03. Good think I checked before.
