ASROCK

Does anyone know if it's true that ASUS bought out ECS and is selling their boards as the ASROCK to compete with the lower end market.................

No, ASRock is just a subsiduary of Asus. ECS occasionally jobs out OEM boards for Asus.

ECS makes boards for Shuttle (all) and Abit (some).
ASRock is an ASUS spinoff to compete with the ECS business model of making no-nonsense boards at rock bottom prices for the OEM market. ASRock try to undercut ECS pricing by using slightly outdated chipsets.

Now ECS countered by introducing the Syntax brand - even lower prices than ASRock, also by using slightly outdated chipsets ... I've seen their KT266A/8235 chipset board (w/ LAN and USB2) go for as low as 29 euros on its introduction day (now it's 45).

Interesting Peter, I have not heard of Syntax in the US. Thanks for the info on this low cost spinoff.

Sadly, it has been quite awhile since I had an official PR contact within the ECS organization.

BTW, a little clarification on my earlier post, Asus actually purchased an ECS notebook factory , not ECS producing boards for Asus. I couldn't quite remember how ECS and Asus where interacting, so I just hit up the news system for a quick search.
