ECS makes boards for Shuttle (all) and Abit (some).
ASRock is an ASUS spinoff to compete with the ECS business model of making no-nonsense boards at rock bottom prices for the OEM market. ASRock try to undercut ECS pricing by using slightly outdated chipsets.
Now ECS countered by introducing the Syntax brand - even lower prices than ASRock, also by using slightly outdated chipsets ... I've seen their KT266A/8235 chipset board (w/ LAN and USB2) go for as low as 29 euros on its introduction day (now it's 45).
