| AMD 2001 Vintage Mobo: connector colors
After giving up on upgrading my PII/266, I'm assembling a "new" system based on an AMD 950mHz CPU and motherboard. There are 2 connectors for the ribbon cables. My new HD manual explains the gray & black connectors on the cable itself, but the mobo has one red and one white connector. I will need to use one ribbon cable for my HD and zip drive, and the second one for CD/DVD reader and the CD burner.
What is the significance of the red ribbon cable connector and the white one?
Thanks! |

Probably just the red one is the primary and the white the secondary.
Is that a "slot A" athlon...if so, you know you wont be able to upgrade any farther?
By the way, you have a PM. (private message)

man...why dont you all cut the dude a break with all this rtfm CRAP
I am glad we have new members asking questions...if its a burden to you all to answer them..then go find something else to do. lol.
I wanna be ugly and say RTFR about threadcrapping....but the sad thing is..it takes just as much effort to threadcrap as it does to at least TRY to help, lol.
Funcrew...this is a cool place...you just have to overlook the idiots sometimes...even if they are being idiotic in jest.

Easy. For one, I've put a smilie behind it, bit of sarcasm should be recognizably un-unfriendly.
Funcrew, of course you're welcome to tell us what motherboard you have and ask us for assistance in finding the FM if you can't. We'll then even help you make sense of it. |

Hey Peter M, I know u were playing cuz of the smilie.
Of course..a new dude with a super low post count may not realize it yet.
Besides...I hafta stick up for funcrew..he and I were in WW2 together and..well.... he saved my life. He charged a german pillbox after I got hit....he took a few hits himself but somehow he lived. He doesnt like to talk about it much and when he does he tells the story the other way around.
Thats why I stick up for him though.

Well, seein' as how he was a war bud, John, I'll pipe in with a clue
Take a real close look at the motherboard, right around those red and white IDE connectors. You may see, very close to one end or the other of the connector, something that says IDE1 or IDE 2 or something similar. The one that says IDE 1 will be the primary IDE connector, the one where your hard drive will go. Observe the color coding on the cable and set the jumpers on your HDD for Master and you'll be good to go.
Oftentimes, on a mobo like that, the red IDE connector will be the Primary or IDE1. You can always throw the thing together and boot it up, and if the hard drive shows on the POST screen as primary master, you're cool. If it shows as secondary, use the other motherboard connector.
Besides, in Korea, funcrew swallowed a ChiCom tank just as it was about to roll right over me, lying there with three broken legs and and a sprained gall bladder.....
