I just put my brand new, refurbished ASUS P5A mobo in my old GA5AX box this afternoon. I only spent $45. Not a bad buy I think.
Right out of the plain, white cardboard box, I set the jumpers to:
2.2V Core
120MHz FSB
4.5X Multiplier
Throw in my old K6-2 450 and am rockin' ... kinda.
I go to the BIOS and set it up, tell it to AUTO find everything on Secodary IDE channel and set up the Primary with my 15GB WD (yuck, but it was free).
I exit BIOS, it reboots, going good... It hangs on the AUTO of the Master Secondary IDE where I have an 8X DVD (generic). Hmmm, wonder what's going on.
I swap IDE cable with the Primary Channel, reboot, same thing, no Master Secondary IDE.
Turns out, the Secondary IDE Channel won't let me run with two drives on it. Everything works great if I put the 15GB WD on the Secondary IDE as Master and put the 8X DVD and the Yamaha 8X8X24X as Master/Slave on the Primary Channel.
What would you do, send the mobo back and get credit, or just leave it as is, I'm only using it to run ECCp and play some games.
It runs ROCK SOLID at the settings it's at. |

Heck, if it runs like this and you are only using it for ECCP keep it.. Did you try any other combinations like maybe hd on primary with CD and DVD on second ide..or hd and dvd and cd on secondary? |

Tom- This was my first setup:
IDE0: Pri-15GB WD
IDE1: Pri-DVD Sec-CDRW
Now:
IDE0: Pri-DVD Sec-CDRW
IDE1: Pri-15GB WD
It's working, but ...
ECCp is only running at 40K !!! Should be around 160K. That's just wrong. I have another 450MHz at friends house that I am going to get tomorrow and double check the mobo. If I can't get above 40K on ECCp, it's going back!!! |

Well, I figured out what was wrong. I broke the CPU when I put the HSF on! I am using a PIII FCPGA HSF that comes with OEM CPUs. I wasn't paying any attention and I put the HSF on backwards. There's a little ledge that covers part of the socket on the mobo, and I put it on the wrong side.
Needless to say, I now have my first K6-2/450MHz keychain!
Maybe I can sell it on eBay ... |

Hope no one minds this question...but everyone here seems to have some knowledge of the AMD K6 CPUs. I have an IBM desktop that runs perfect..but is kind of old....Pentium 200 at the moment.. Knowing that I can't kick up the FSB from 66 mhz, do you think any of the K6 CPUs would be worth the money and offer a speed improvement... I only use it for burning CDs and ECCP, so don't need a lot of power....It has 128 meg of ram, 3 gig hd and is running W98se and has the latest BIOS upgrade offered by IBM. I was wondering which would be the best, a K6 2 or a K6 3 and if they would even run on this system as it is set up. This case was used all the way up thru the PIIIs but can't find a mobo replacement that would fit and really don't want to spend all that much on an old system. It is a 300GL and will take any Intel CPU up to the Pentium 200 mmx.
Any help appreciated..

I'm pretty sure that the 200 Pentium was "dual voltage core"
Does it say MMX, or have a jumper that says "VRE" ?
If you are stuck at 66mhz set the multiplier to 2 that is seen as 6x by K6's and you get 400mhz
I went to "another" forum and searched for about an hour looking for the website that deals with o/c old mobo's with the 400mhz K6-2 and faster AMD's
I can tell you the last post dealing with the issue

Radar,
your old mainboard might just be unable to feed the K6-III beast when running at its full speed. K6-III/400 2.4V requires about 12.5 Amperes, 2.2V types are slightly above 10. If you take a 2.4V model and run it 2.5V, that adds even more.
Now with old mainboards either having 5 Amperes capable linear regs, or 8 Amperes switching regs (10 if you're really lucky), the K6-III might just starve. (What happens is that with the voltage regulators overloaded, regulation quality goes beyond the +.1V/-.1V tolerance, affecting stability so much that it won't even POST.)

Hi,
all K6-2 from rev. 8 onward, and all K6-III have the 6.0x multiplier at the jumper setting where older processors had 2.0x.
The mainboard can't hinder that, since it just provides the three jumper setting. The multiplier is internal to the processor. Bus frequency doesn't hinder the multiplication |
