    Front USB ports don't work /Fixed it/

Hi all, I have a K7S5A Pro board and I can't seem to get the front USB ports to work, the back ports work fine. I installed the drivers from the disk, but still nothing, my digital camera is not recognized in the front ports but is in the back. Has anyone had this problem and what did you do to fix it? Thanks.

OK...do not be insulted by this but I just want to rule out the obvious first...are the wires from the front bezel of the case for the USB ports, attached to the correct pins on your motherboard?
I have the same board as you and I can help you figure out what wires connect to what pins if you need it.

Hello JP, yes I have the wires are in the right spot.

    pins 1&2 = power
    pins 3&4 = neg signal
    pins 5&6 = pos signal
    pins 7&8 = ground
no pin on 9 and pin 10 isn't used.
    see crappy pic

The ECS web sites have the pinout. Including a high resolution photo of the connector.

did you try re-installing the mobo drivers from the disk? (On second thought I dont believe there are drivers for that...)
also you may want to remove the front bezel and make sure the USB port cable is connected securely also...(to the front panel)

Do you have a PCI card in the topmost PCI slot?

Peter M, I have the manual for that board so I'm sure the wires are connected right.
sm8000, I don't have any PCI cards installed. I know about that issue, the ports in the back do work fine, it's just the 3 USB ports in the front that don't work.
JPMiller, I have already checked that and they are installed correctly. I just don't understand why they don't work.

Edit: I also removed the ports in device manager and rebooted and windows reinstalled them and I reinstalled the drivers from the disk. I have VIA drivers and SiS drivers on the disk and when I install the SiS drivers the other ports in the back don't work. That's when I removed them in device manager and reinstalled upon re-boot.

the plugs look right . thats how they are set up on mine . did you try the other usb connectors just to the right of them ?

do you have another case you can pull the front usb connectors out of to test to see if it is the connectors and not the motherboard ?

    Omardeth, I tried JUSB1 & 2 before and I just tried JUSB3 and it doesn't work either.

Edit, well I should say when I plug in my camera it says "USB Device Not Recognized". So does that mean they are working and it just doesn't recognize my camera? And if so why does it find it on the rear ports?

not sure if they have to be enabled in the bios did you check .

are you sure that the front usb connector are good? that could be the problem also .

well if it says "USB Device Not Recognized" that means the port is working but it doesn't know what you pluged into it .

Ok, the only other USB device I have is a mouse so I tried that and it said the same thing, "USB Device Not Recognized". How can this port work and not recognize anything?

Well I figured out what was wrong. It seems that the port itself was bad, I have a USB cable like this one so I pluged it into the board's front port headers to test it and tried it again and they're all working so the device I modded into the case must be bad,

I will try to find another device like it to replace it.
Thanks for all your help guys.

Front USB ports don't work on Asus CM1630

The front USB ports don't recognize anything I plug in, but if I leave something in and restart, I get an "overcurrent" type message. Asus support is pretty clunky and spotty about addressing this. I assume they are connected, or I wouldn't get any "overcurrent" message?

You should start your own post!

    Welcome to TechIMO!

Is this a computer that you built yourself?

Front ports have no standard pin out, for the plug that plugs into the motherboard.

You have to find the diagram for your board, and check/change the pin out.

The USB socket on the front should be OK.
You may need a test light to figure out what wire is what, as the colors are not standard either.

I think you should trash the board and get a modern one. It is certainly obsolete by now!
