Converting slot 1 w/ slocket on M741LMR

OK here is the deal. I've got a PC Chips 741LMR slot 1 board, 66/100 bus, the max multiplier is 8x. All of this is set via the bios, no jumpers. I also have a Celeron 900 FCPGA cpu that I've installed on a generic socket 370 slocket that auto detects the proper settings. If I set the bus speed in the boards bios to 100 the boot screen shows the cpu as an 800, other software shows it as 900 and it crashes shortly after booting [couple minutes] If I set the bus to 66 the boot screen shows a 533 but other software shows it is a 600 and it runs fine. I used it like this for over an hour with a Knoppix cd. I would like to use the cpu at or near it's 900mhz specification. Any suggestions or should I be looking for a different cpu or board?

You might look to see if the board has a BIOS upgrade to recognize higher CPU's.

Already flashed to latest bios, July 2 1999. Yes this is the latest bios from PC Chips. LOL

I'd say you're SOL then. I've got a board that stops at a 5X multiplier, but will recognize over that. I've had 6X's in it before. Then again, it wasn't a PCChips.

You say you're manually setting the FSB to 100, have you tried it at Auto?

If not, it's probably not going to run anything above 8X.

Why would it be happy at 8x 66 but not happy at 8x 100 ? When it is a 900mhz cpu? Go figure!

You say the BIOS shows 533 (8X66) but programs show 600 (9X66). The multiplier of the CPU is overriding the BIOS and is obviously causing some issues.

This may be correct, same thing when I set the bios to 8x 100, Knoppix shows it as 900 but it won't run very long and it goes down in flames.

Anyone know where I could d/l a hacked bios that may offer better support?

Multipliers are preset and fixed internally inside the CPU. The multiplier setting provided by the board is irrelevant for anything newer than a PII-400.

If it runs at 66 but not at 100 MHz, then it's not a matter of the board's BIOS supporting the CPU or not. See whether using a known good stick of RAM fixes it - you wouldn't be the first to have a bad DIMM ...
