Exclamation Need help with TV outputs.

I have two sets of Altec Lansing 251 5.1 speakers. I want to hook at least one up to my tv. I have a digital cable box and a playstation 2. They are both connected to the back of the tv through av's. I want to hook up this speaker set to the tv, so whatever is coming out the tv speakers will come out the altecs. I have this adapter which came with one of the speaker sets:

And I have a red/white audio cable. I plugged the one end of the audio cables into the outputs, then the other end into the inputs on the adapter. and then the part that normally goes into the pc, I plugged into the green part. But there is no noise coming through. I know its not the wires or adapter or speakers, cuz it works fine If I just plug it directly into the back of the cable box audio ports or plug the audio cables from the ps2 into it. The sound comes through great. But that would require me to change the wires everytime I wanted to watch tv or play ps2. I hope someone can understand my problem. This is the first time I've used the outputs on a tv.. Shouldnt this work? I hope somebody understands my dilemma.
