reinstalled windows = no more sound!!!
hey everyone. my old hard drive took a crap on me so got a new one and reinstalled windows (XP PRO) and now i have no more sound. if it matters, my old operating system was windows ME which i had upgraded (not reinstalled) to the XP PRO. can anyone help me here?

You need to determine what sound card you have or the chipset of the sound system if it is onboard and download the drivers for it. Do you know what sound card or audio chipset it is?

Make sure you have most updated drivers installed.
BTW, I would do a clean install of Windows XP.
Your machine is probably trying to load outdated drivers for ME.AMD Athlon 64 3000+ @ 2GHz

Ok so u got a new hd and installed ME and then u upgraded to XP? If so then like what has already been posted: reinstall drivers or format HD and do a clean install

no im saying on my old hard drive in which my sound was fine had windows ME which was later upgraded to XP PRO. now that a new hard drive is in place i just installed XP pro.

Refer to my 1st post. Also look in Control Panel> System> Harware> Device Manager and make sure it is not installed under "other". If it is you'll need to remove this entry to install the proper drivers.

Ah, OK.
So, just try and find the most updated drivers for your sound card via Motherboard CD-ROM or Internet and install them.
Should be all.AMD Athlon 64 3000+ @ 2GHz

thanks guys for your quick responses. did a search and found some downloadable drivers that are compatable with XP. oh yea!!!!! i now have sound!!!!
