sound fades in and out!
I have a Sound Blaster 5.1 LIVE!. Recently I noticed that while playing music in winamp the sound will fade out to almost nothing and then come back up. It will also flucuate. I have a Creative 5.1 speaker setup too. Don't know if that matters. I turned off the automatic volume control in the winamp waveOut and directsound codec thingys.

What kinda of MP3's or CD's are you using? It might be them, WMP does that fade in/fade out thing when there are errors in whatever you're listening to.

I don't think that that is the problem, these MP3's played fine before this started happening...and it does it sometimes and not other times.

Was there anything wrong with the speaker?
A problem transistor in the speaker could probably cause the "crossfade" effect.
If only the dead can speak, then we will know what's happening to us all next...

Icer, if there is a problem with the speaker is it anything I could fix my self. If it isn't worth fixing or something what would you guys suggest be my next sound system. I want something with deep bass and very high highs. Something that I can blast without distortion.

I have the identical problem
Just did a search for the same problem and I cam upon this post. I can't believe you were having this problem 5 years ago, and I am having the same problem too, and I have two machines with the same Creative 5.1 Live! sound card, running winamp, and both sharing the same sound system with an A/B switch. Only difference is I am using a Cambrige 5.1 surround sound, but I think Creative labs make them. I'm going to try and update the drivers. I hope its not the sound system. 5 years and still no answer to this problem.

5.1 Sound Problems
I have the same issues with my 5.1 Cambridge Soundworks speakers. Odd that we would both get it in the same month. I do not have a soundblaster however. It just started happening recently, I've used these speakers for years with no problems. It does it for winamp, movies, games, everything sound related. Sound coming out of my USB headphones is perfect however. I think it is either a problem with the realtek hd audio, or the 5.1 speakers, or maybe something entirely unrelated.

I'm having this same problem. Admittedly the Live 5.1 card is outdated but I'm a student (read: broke).
Anyway, something I tried that might have helped:
In control panel/sounds and audio devices.
click the advance speaker settings.
drop down the speaker settings box and select 'no speakers'
i just did that and so far so good. maybe it worked or maybe my speakers have stopped fading for the moment (i don't notice this problem all the time), either way that's my suggestion aside from upgrading the hardware.
creative has a similar suggestion in their support area.
Sound Blaster Live 5.1 - Imbalanced sound playback in 4 speaker mode.
This happens when an effect selected from the Environmental Audio tab, is called upon in another media option.
To remove any Environmental Audio effects try the following:
1. Click Start and go to Programs, then Creative. Click Creative Launcher
2. From the taskbar select Playcenter and open Environmental effects
3. Set to 'No Effects'
Alternatively from the Creative Launcher select Audio HQ - Speaker - Effects - Environmental effects, and select 'No Effects'.
If any of this helps...you're welcom

First thing to do would be to try headphones instead of speakers to see if the problem is with the speakers or with the computer (i.e. the sound card)
Using Creative Inspire 5.1 set for about 5 years now and no problems so far - these babies were cheap and seem to be rock solid.
