For gaming, you're going to want a headset most likely. Don't try looking for 5.1 headsets, they don't exist. 5.1 headphones are too expensive and aren't any good for anything except movie-watching and gaming.
Just look for a regular headset, and ask around on Head-Fi.org

Just bought a set of Koss Portapros, $40 bucks. Not a bad product at all. I would recommend it.
Mr. Jiggyfly, I have good news...

Hey Mike, is the vibrating low bass effect cool? Also, can you detatch the mic or is it integrated?
Thanks.

Unfortunately I'm using onboard sound and it only supports L/R and sub.

July 24th, 2004, 02:13 PM #11I just found it funny how md says not to go for 5.1 headphones for gaming but says that they are good for gaming.

I got these headphones about a month ago... http://www.sennheisercommunications.com/pr-pc155.html
They work great. If you're going to use them for gaming, you should definetly get headphones with a microphone. Even if you don't play on-line now, you may want to in the future, there's nothing like it! Playing on-line, you'll probably want to join a squad, or form your own squad with some buddies one day. So you definetly need a mic. It just so happens that Maximum PC reviewed those same headphones a couple weeks ago and they say that they're about the best gaming headphones that you can get. The only suggestion they had was to get the ones without the USB adapter. I think they are the PC 150's. You can plug them straight into the sound card instead of USB, and they said the USB adapter cuts some of the signal strength. Of course, you can always get the PC 155's and just use them without the USB adapter like I do. Then you'll have the adapter in case you ever want to use them on a PC without a sound card. If you don't get those, I think the second best headphones are made by Logitech. same design, with the mic. If you definetly don't want the mic. then I would suggest the Zalman 5.1's. Good luck.

sennheiser is THE high end brand out there, which cost you an arm and leg, if you like vibration with your music/game Panasonic makes one with VMSS the model number is RP-HT970 BTW, i've had this HEADPHONE for almost 6 month now, it works "okay" to me, what Mike has i have YET to look into. however, a good pair of headset if important, i would suggest you looking into DJ headphones, what you really want to look for is the response range, something like 6hz - 3k would be the best :-)

July 24th, 2004, 03:17 PM #14... You're twisting my words. 5.1 headphones are good for gaming, but for practical purposes, they probably won't suit his needs.

wait... 6hz to 3khz is best? what happened to the rest of the frequency spectrum??? also, i didnt know headphones can get lower than my sub can... 6hz is insane... are u sure?

Headphones can get that low, but you can't hear it I think.
Subwoofers make a lot more noise than headphones, so I guess it's easier to hit lower frequencies at lower volumes, right?

The frequency range that a healthy person can hear is about 20 hz to 20,000 hz. Of course, as you get older you start losing some of that, especially on the high end. Generally, when looking for high fidelity stereo equipment you should look for something with as close to that range as you can get. Of course, just because a product has a good freq. range doesn't mean that they sound good. There are alot of other factors. That's why it's good to either try before you buy, or if not possible, to read reviews from trustworthy people.

Expanding on Idigguns's comments, keep in mind that the frequency range the manufacturer advertises means nothing. Everyone has their own method of testing headphones, and believe me, my friend's headphones, which supposedly go to 6 hz, could never even dream of 30.
