    codec

    hey guys
i have a problem playing an .avi file on my computer, none of my players won't play it, power dvd just does nothing and win media player says that it cannot play the file because it might not support the file type (which i doubt since it's avi) or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file. well that i understand but my question is: is there a way to find out WHICH codec was actually used? i have quite a few in my computer but have no idea which one i need for this file to play as neither of the players actually says which codec is needed. also i have another .avi file which plays fine with power dvd but when i try to play it in win media player i get the same error message about the codec again. does anyone know why? i don't get it... thanx for help

loads of help there. i think you might need divx player or at least the coded bundle that comes with it. that will allow you to play most avi files. also, i wish i could remeber, but i know there is a program that will tell you what codec the video file was made with. that would certainly help if you could find it
what? like a blue spider? get it off!

DIVX player with a KazaaLite Megacodec installed handles most of what I throw at it.

i found something called afreeCodecVT which should help with identifying the codec but the comments say that it has some issues with norton, has anyone tried this soft?
