Sound Recorder

I have this friend (not me ok!) that is a guitarist and wants to record himself playing onto his comp. I want to know two things:

-A program that records sound from a mic (like 10+ minutes)-not windows sound recorder lol. Preferably free!
-How to connect the guitar to the comp to record (stores in canada if possible)

I need ta know both asap

THANKS!

The best Free audio-recording program for now is Audacity. If you need to record the electric guitar using a microphone, the quality of the recording will not be very good. A much better solution would be to record the guitar onto a mixer. Does your friend have a Guitar Effects Processor and a mixer? If so, there is absolutely no need to record the guitar via microphone. I am not quite sure if a Guitar Effects Processor will plug into your mini jack on the computer, if it does, you don't even need a mixer.

naw, he has nothing of the sort. He needs this for a summative grade assignment. He is looking for a cheap and easy way to hook up his guitar to his comp.

He could go with an relativly long 1/4" to 1/8" adapter cable, one end into the guitar the other into the mic in. That should work fine for basic stuff. Like crypto said having some sort of preamp/fx like a zoom 505 or something would be nice, he could go with the line in getting a better signal to noise ratio.

The adapter cable would preferably be mono but doesnt make much of a difference.
