DVD burning
Hi
I dl'ed some tv shows and I would like to burn them into a dvd. Each is 700mb so roughly 6 files would fit in a 4.7gb dvd. The format of the media is avi. Is there a simple way to encode it and burn them into the dvd? Thanks.

hello?
I think you should answer my question, because I did a search and I havn't found the answer.
I tried encoding the 700mb (1h 18min) files, but they are each ~4gb. How can i fit 6 episodes (700 each) into one dvd-r disc.

Normally the TV shows that you download are in a compressed format that use the AVI Container. xVid and DivX are popular. I have seen a few tools like Virtual dub which will let you re convert the videos back to Mpeg2 DVD format for burning. Can anyone input on the legality of downloading TV Shows? I think it is legal but I am not sure.

virtualdub can only create AVIs... not mpeg.
You'd need something like TMPGEnc for that.

OK so Virtual Dub -> *.avi -> TMPGenc -> *.mpeg

I could have swore I have seen tools that do all of those steps for you but they want $29.99 to do it.

Especially since it sound like youve never done this stuff. Nero is very user friendly and you will get a great quality dvd in the end. Its all I use.

I even have the adobe premiere pro package with it. Just slower and harder to use then nero for a quick movie. Now adobie premiere does ALOT more detailed editing but thats for the more serious user willing to get there hands dirty.

Are you asking this so that the format can be seen and correctly read by a standalone DVD player hooked up to your TV?

Yes. Is it possible to put 6 episodes each 700mb? (~1h18m) I tried encoding with TMPGenc, but each file is ~4.1gb.

Did you try nero. Thats exactly what it does. Lets you take several movies and combine into one. Then creates menus and all kindsa stuff to go with. Just follow the wizard.

You need DVD Shrink.
The files you download are encoded with DivX to make the file size smaller. When you convert back to .mpeg or .vob the file size goes back up. That is why they won't fit. So, after you have converted your file to mpeg with TMPGenc, you open them with DVD Shrink and make them the file size you want. However, picture quality will take a beating.

If I used DVD shrink to change the size. How bad will the picture quality decrease? I don't mind if it's not DVD quality. Would it look bad on a 32in TV?
I havn't tried nero yet, since I havn't had the time. So does nero encode it to mpge format and change the file size? Sorry if that's what your answer means, I just want to make sure.Last edited by minduka; January 25th, 2005 at 02:16 AM.

Nero 6 will convert and burn for you in one step as long as you are able to watch the .avi on your computer.
And you will not fit 6- 78min shows on a DVD. You'll be lucky to get respectable quality with 2 or 3.

DVD Shrink won't open avi or mpeg they have to be in the VOB format with separate folders for vid and sound. For VHS tapes I've had to record 1st then burn to HD. In my case I'm using WinDVD creator to make movie (burn) from the corresponding mpeg file. DVD shrink's main attribute seems to be working with existing dvd structures. I haven't found a simple conversion tool for mpeg to vob. It probebly doesn't exist because I'm finding out it's not a simple process. However, I am having a good success rate converting my vhs collection- just takes time.

For ease of use, I'd say use NERO's build in movie making app. It is simple to use, and bottom line is.. it works.
