Coaster Toaster- My DVD Burners

Help!! Has anyone had trouble with their DVD burners?

I have 2 burners and it now seems like I need a third. My first burner (K-Hypermedia +R) started to act flaky so I purchased a Toshiba (+/-R SD-R5272 ). My Toshiba worked great when I first purchased it, but it has recently stopped burning DVDs. It will read DVDs ocassionally and it will burn CD-Rs, but it will not burn DVDs.

I have tried different media and I have tried to burn different things to the DVD (data, audio, etc.), but it has not worked. The burner goes through the process and actually burns something to the disc, but it cannot read what it burns nor can any other DVD drive of any sort.

Because of this, I have started using my old K-Hypermedia. It worked for a while, but now it is doing the same thing.

Is it me, is it my burners, is it the environment...what the heck is going on?

either you smoke too much, or you want to try an nec or liteon. dvd burners are getting cheap enough to start being considered as commodity items, like cd burners.

I'm pretty sure if you follow paul9's advise you won't go wrong. The problem might lie in where you are buying your burners.

No smoking for me...unless you mean the smoke coming from my ears as I remain from throwing the burners out the window. Any links or stores that sell the above burners for good prices?

I purchased one from Tiger and one from OfficeMax. Any problems there?

They might be fairly inexpensive, but it can become quite expensive if I have to purchase a new one every few months.

I have heard of crazy spyware messing with burners. Is there any chance that the drives are alright? Yes, I am tryign to be as optimistic as possible.

you can always try uninstalling, reinstalling, then downloading the newest drivers from the manufacturers website

I think your best bet would be to get an nec from newegg.com

after trying a wet dvd cleaning disc, then letting the drives dry for a few minutes, try a different brand of blank dvd discs. otherwise you may have a failing drive. are you a generally unlucky person?

I've got a Plextor 712 that has never given me any problem.
