First thing that comes to mine is can it read the media your using , eg if your burning DVD+R try getting a DVD-R disk and see if it makes any differance.

But if the backups are ones he burned, why could it burn them and not read them? (I am assuming here that by backups, you mean dvds you yourself burned on your computer with that burner) Does it do that on all the backups or just some? Because if it only does that on some of them, I would say try higher quality media. (Spend more on the blank DVDs).
But then what do you mean by "my originals." The more I think about it the more confused I get! What are the "originals" and what are the "backups?"

when i say the originals, i mean the dvd's i bought at the store. backups are the ones i burned, not with the same drive, the burner is external, i'm using fujifilm dvd+r. didnt think of the dvd-r. i either copy the whole dics menus' and all... or i only copy the movie.

let me ask this. the error message i'm gettin, does it sound like a problem with the dvd drive, or could it be like the software, or decoders. others have recommended that, but it has worked out for me.

i'm pretty sure he means movie dvds he rents and rips.

it is wierd that you can't play it on the same drive you burned it on..

what program are you using to:

    A. rip the movie
    B.burn the movie

does the movie play in a regular standalone TV dvd player?

i see you said it's a matshita dvd-rom sr-8176, could the shit be coming out of it?

    lol just kidding-

    good luck

how are you burning the movie? you can't just copy the files from one drive to the other....you need to use a program to do it like nero (or if nero won't do it) dvd shrink
