my computer thinks my dvd drive is a scanner
I have an HP Pavilion, AMD Athlon XP, 2600+, 2.08gz computer running Win XP Home. I also have an HP DVD writer 300c.
My computer seems to think my dvd writer is a scanner. Whenever I put a dvd into the drive, I get the little window at the bottom right of my screen above the task bar which is like a timer looking for a scanner.
What gives? I am open to suggestions as to how to fix this. Everytime I contact HP, they tell me to wipe the hard drive and then reinstall everything. This is a pretty poor excuse for an answer as far a I am concerned.

Is your dvd writer an external USB model?

No, it is internal.

This sounds like an autoplay issue. Go to the drive properties and set all media to "Take no action". If that stops this behavior, you're all set.

dvd drive thinks it is a scanner
I just set all properties to "take no action" and it did not fix the problem.

Do you have a scanner program that runs in the system tray? Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling it?

Hi If you installed Avira Antivirus correctly before, the above step should help you uninstall it successfully. Click Start menu and go to Control Panel.
