I am no expert with hi-fi like this, but try to look for some upmix features in the manual. I mean if you are playing back a CD this is a stereo format. So I would not be surprised if, by default, rear speakers were not playing. Perhaps this systems has some logic that upmixes stereo to 5.1. Perhaps a Dolby PLII button or something like this.
