Wireless Speakers

Hello everyone,

My Aunt wants me to help her setup wireless speakers in 4 rooms of her house so that she can walk from her bedroom to the kitchen while still listening to the same song.

However, I know very little about wireless speakers and will need all the help I can get from TechIMO and it's members to make sure that I select the right equipment.

I need to know what kind of stereo system I would need to get to be able to broadcast out to the speakers, and I need to know how many speakers maximum that I can have.

Best Buy has a list of wireless speakers, but I do not know which are good or bad.

Wireless Speakers - BestBuy

Distance is important as she has a two story house and she wants one of the rooms upstairs to be able to play music as well.

Thanks,
-Biz

4 rooms - stereo? = 8 speakers...

Wireless speakers all need a built in amp. So in effect they are not truly "wireless". The speaker needs power..

If her needs are only one speaker in each room, then you could get away with a wireless 5.1 surround sound system. Just change the setting to stereo on all speakers. But you will find songs that exclusively use two channels, so left and right is important. Especially older songs..

Transmission on wireless speakers is more for a room and not house. Around 25 feet or so.. You could use a RF transmitter that uses some dead spot on the FM dial to transmit the audio. So that means any radio can pick up the same song.

FM radio transmitters like the following:

Digital FM Transmitter

500mW PLL Home FM Radio Stereo Broadcast Transmitter - eBay (item 280208452652 end time Jun-10-08 05:03:15 PDT)

CAR FM RADIO TRANSMITTER STEREO for MP3/iPOD NANO 3G 2G - eBay (item 110253283498 end time May-18-08 12:49:48 PDT)

Synthesized FM Stereo Transmitter Kit, Case, Adapter & Whip Antenna FM25B (Special Deal!)

The small units are more for in the car, but I have used one that worked throughout the house just fine.

FCC regulation may apply..

That FM Transmitter may be a good idea.

As for the wireless bit, she only needs to music to be broadcast wirelessly. She just wants to have a speaker in each room so that she does not have to tear through her walls to run wires. Having a completely wireless speaker (running on battery) is not necessary.

Will the FM transmitter let her control the stereo from any room as well? (Adjust volume, change track, ect..)

Mt aunt and I checked out out local Best Buy's Magnolia theater system room and found a Sony Hone Theater in a Box system that has what is called "S-Air" technology. Basically, it is a wireless speaker system.

With this system, you can purchase $119 wireless speakers and place them in every room of your house. The wireless speakers also allow you to control the stereo system from it, so that you don't have to walk to the room that has the home theater in it to change the song or adjust the volume, it lets you do it directly from the speaker.

DAV-HDX576WF | BRAVIAŽ Theater System | Sony | SonyStyle USA

I think this will serve the purpose that my aunt wants.
