How important is my sound card?

I am putting together a new build and was picking out a sound card. Is it really necessary to spend much cash on a sound card? I do not work with any music programs or sound editing. The only thing I do sound related is some video editing and listen to music. Will the standard card do? Why spend the money?

I was thinking about this basic card.

I think that card is plenty for what you need; of course, the better the card (and more expensive), the better the sound, it's ultimately your decision.

In my book all Creative cards are super.

Creative is known for good game support, but not neccesarily the best sound quality. But it won't make much difference unless you are sending the signal to a home theater et al.

Don't know what your motherboard is going to be but the on board sound on my Asus board is sooo good, listen to mostly classical 24/7, that I've nixed any idea of using any sound card. It seems to me that good speakers is what make the biggest difference.

I agree. ^
I have a Soundblaster card, and my onboard sounds just as good. I noticed more of a difference when I added GOOD speakers. I'd say save money on the sound card, and put it towards nice speakers.
