Ok, I don't know how to start this, but a few days ago, my computer contracted a virus (which I have cleaned successfully) and around the same time of the virus, the sound on my computer stopped working. I'm not exactly sure what information someone would need to help me, but I'll put what I think might help (because I really need my music D=)
System:
Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 2
Computer:
Intel(R) Pentium(R) M
processor 1500MHz
1.50 GHz, 768 of RAM
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
Sound information.
I have a IBM Thinkpad T40 and the original sound device was
SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio version 5.12.1.3535
As for the 'device status' it says "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"
The only sound my computer makes is the occasion 'boop' when I do something wrong. |
so you tried different restore points to before you think you got the virus and still no sound?
Ok, what about a system restore disk that shipped comes with the computer? Are you able to restore drivers through it? Most have some option to reinstall hardware drivers. |
First, download the file 1ga241ww.exe from here Lenovo Support & downloads - Audio driver for Windows XP, 2000, 98SE - ThinkPad R40, R50, R50e, R50p, R51, T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p, X31, X32, X40. Assuming I did the correct search, this should be your sound drivers.
Next, go into control panel, System, Device manager. Find your sound card, click it, and remove it. If windows tries to install it again, click cancel.
Now, run the downloaded file. During the process, windows may find and install your product. This is normal. After it's installed, you may have to reboot.
It's also possible that the sound card just went out on it. I used to work on these laptops for a local company. If I recall correctly, removing the keyboard and the top plate gives you access to the sound card. You can usually pick up a used one on ebay.
Hope this helps. |
It didn't install I think. I ran the program but there is no extra sound thing under my Device Manager. Before I uninstalled it my SoundMax thing had a yellow exclamation point beside it in the Device Manager, along with my Audio Codecs, Media Control Devices and Video Codecs.
That link you sent me had instructions to install it and it said I should go to run and type in this 'C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO\SETUP.EXE' but when I did a small window popped up and said 'Driver not found, please reboot your system'. So I did and tried again and it said the same thing.  |
Okay, this one is from gateway. Click on the download now button to get it. SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio DriverVersion: 5.12.01.5240
When you run the exe file, it should install the sound card and drivers. If it creates a directory only, go back into device manager, double click on the sound card, and click update driver. Browse to the folder it created and click okay.
If the sound card is bad, none of these ideas will work. But it's cheaper than buying a card first. |
Ok, it went through the process of updating and transferring files but at the end of the wizard it said 'Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)' |
Code 19
A registry problem was detected.
This can occur when more than one service is defined for a device, if there is a failure opening the service subkey, or if the driver name cannot be obtained from the service subkey. Try these options:
On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooting wizard.
Click Uninstall, and then click Scan for hardware changes to load a usable driver.
Restart the computer in Safe Mode, and then select Last Known Good Configuration, which rolls back to the most recent successful registry configuration.
As a last resort, you can edit the registry directly. For more information, see the Registry Reference in the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit at Windows Resource Kits - Web Resources.
To start Windows XP in safe mode, start the System Configuration Utility (click Start, Run, type msconfig and press Enter).
Select the BOOT.INI tab.
Tick the check box marked /SAFEBOOT and click OK.
Restart the computer when prompted, and it will restart in safe mode.
Before closing down or restarting from safe mode, repeat these steps and untick the box marked /SAFEBOOT. |
Ok, I restarted it in SafeMode did a system restore (which only gave the option of yesterday morning, which my sound was still not working then) and started my computer again but its still has the same error message on the device properties.
And I don't know what to do with that link. As in I don't know where to go from there... |
