| PS3 Media Serving - Videos Won't Skip to Next
I've been playing with my PS3's ability to use a media server to toy with playing music and video straight from my PC. So far it's been a bit of a disappointment, though functional to some degree. I'm just using WMP11 on XP to serve up the data over my wireless. Connection and throughput haven't been a problem.
The first problem is that many of my video files that play fine on my PC and my el'cheapo $50 WalMart-bought Ultra DivX player of two years old do not play on my PS3. I often get "usupported" notices for the media/codecs, or as occurred once last night: something is horribly scrambled. I haven't tried a vast array of items or done a thorough itemization of what codecs/versions are having problems, though I probably won't as the next problem is reason enough for me to not worry about converting my favorites to the server for use just yet.
The second problem seems incredibly odd given its simplicity. I can't skip tracks / files when viewing video data on my PS3. I don't have the same problem with music - skipping to the next track / file with MP3's works just fine, but when I'm browsing video files (via folder, playlist, or anything else) there simply is no skip forward >>| - the remote does not produce request, and bringing up the menu shows the function greyed out.
I went ahead an upgraded my firmware to the latest version since I wanted to download some demos and games from the network onto my PS3. Anybody else have this issue, and with which firmware?

This has not been much phun. I have Fedora Core 9 ready to install, because as things are now I've tried Twonky and TVersity and neither cut the cake in clean slices. What's odd right now is the TVersity won't work unless Twonky is running, at which point Twonky doesn't work, and neither work so long as WMP11 is serving, but that's no surprise. I still haven't played much with Twonky on its own without TVersity, thought the major selling point of a console, for me, was to no have to screw around with it too much, but I guess I shouldn't be trying to get my PS3 more versatile, eh!
There is much more screwing around to do before I can come to any judgment other than WMP11 will not cut it. I'm gonna work with Twonky and TVersity some more and see if I can't watch my goodz via that fashion. I do wonder if it's not a lost cause, though, as there's still no continuous play ability with the video tracks even with Twonky and TVersity. Such a simple function sorely missed since our collection is mostly episodes we prefer to watch in marathon.
Why do I continue? I don't really want to convert my favorites to digital format, and there's still no way to pipe internet tv to my PS3 that I've yet found...but I guess it's the only techno play I can afford for the moment until I get me one of those free to air's...

Have you tried using winamp remote? That's what I have to use to get the Wii to watch videos. |

Twonky has worked fair for videos, but I can't get it to work with my music. It shows all the directories, but not the files therein. I still haven't installed Fedora...too much work. I just want to plug and play dangit. |
