There arent a whole ton of great effects, but you can always try Windows Movie Maker, which is free (if you have WinXP) and should already be installed...

Go away spammer
rodkun, if you want to video edit, you are going to have to pay if you want anything half decent. That kind of software is expensive to produce so you are not gonna find a good free one. Other than that, Windows Movie Maker as ShuckyD says.

Pinnacle is by far the best.
It's not free though. But what software doesn't charge nowadays anyway? |

Hi rodkun,
Not sure where you live so have to go with the flow with Movie Maker. If you want to make your editted movies into DVD epics then you will have to pay for it. I love making movies and have done a few weddings and parties for friends plus a few camping trips as well. Over the years I have spent a small fortune on video editting software and am now using Adobe Premier Elements 4 (APE4) as it works with Vista but is still memory hungry so I get the odd PC lock up.
Have just learned how to transfer taped music from my tape player (remember them?) to the PC then onto CDs using Movie Maker. Have not yet figured out how to do it with APE4
Take your time and learn as you go. Do not be scared to experiment BUT keep the original video in the camera until you have editted it, and burned to DVD, to your satisfaction.
ENJOY
