| Media Serving from Windows PC to a PS3 using FUPPES (GPL)
Well, I've been fooling around with getting media to my PS3 over our wireless network. WMP11 worked to some degree, but it tended to crash...a LOT. Nothing new for MS there. Twonky worked alright for about half of my videos, the other half weren't working at all, and music was not working at all. TVersity worked well for my music, but didn't want to touch my video files most of the time (oddly just fine other times without any system changes). Granted my experiments in these were less than cleanly handled, but after Twonky expired I decided to wipe all these options out and give a less "novice" GPL program a try: FUPPES.
I just got my AVi's working, so I'll write up a quick set of instructions on how I did using scattered advise I found on their forums. - [1] Install FUPPES's W32 (Windows Setup) : FUPPES - Free UPnP Entertainment Service
[2] Open the fuppes.cfg file located in C:\Documents and Settings\CURRENTUSERNAME\Application Data\FUPPES
[3] Find <device name="PS3" and change the immediately following to enabled="true">
[4] Find <file ext="avi"> and change its mime type to <mime_type>video/x-divx</mime_type>
[5] Run FUPPES, then right-click the systray icon for it and left-click show webinterface
[6] In that menu select Configuration
[7] In the Add objects: box enter the name of the directory in which your AVI video files are stored, make sure "directory" is selected, and Submit Query. If you have a lot of files I recommend a small sample test directory to get started with as it's going to run through every known filetype (defined in the above config file) and catalog it.
If you had already installed FUPPES and were receiving unsupported data, missing files, or DLNA errors when trying to watch avi files, exit the program and follow the above steps for modifying the config file, then rerun the program, go into Options in the webinterface, and Rebuild Database. Changes made to your config will require the database be rebuilt since the associations and handlings are built into the media server database.
Next is MP3's, and more...but not tonight.

Well, FUPPES hasn't been all that great...but it's serving up videos as a free piece of software. The content not supported issues are strictly with the PS3 itself as they have been consistent with each player.
The downside with FUPPES is the database - it has to be updated whenever you add something, and rebuilt whenever you delete something. It does none of this on its own so far as I have yet seen. |

Ugh i need to relearn to read a whole post
What issues were you having with TVeristy? I have several friends with ps3 who use TVeristy all the time with no problems with video files. |

I was having problems with directories showing up empty sometimes, but not all the time, and there were other issues I just can't recall at the moment, however I wasn't going about things in the cleanest of manners with more than one server running on the same system so I have a feeling it may have been more to do with that...but I didn't keep a log or any details so I'm just guessing. I've really become lazy with this whole thing. The reason for going console was to plug and play... |

FUPPES just up and quit working so I kicked that and went back to TVersity.
I haven't had any directory issues return with TVersity, however the server keeps disappearing for some reason...restarting it resolves, though sometimes it comes back on its own as well. I've also started experiencing some occassional minor stuttering issues, so perhaps I have a network issue with my router. |

Have you tried Orb?
I have tried using Orb on my aunt's PS3 over an internet connection, but I was never lucky enough to figure out how to get videos to play smoothly. Everything else worked perfectly.
However, some people have gotten videos to play just fine on their PS3s so you may have better luck that me.
If you have a router with UPnP support, orb should automatically detect that the PS3 is on the same LAN and instead of trying to stream the content over the internet, it should automatically stream stuff straight over the local network. MyCast your digital media with Orb 2.0 remote pc access software
EDIT: However, the controls are still web based and requires that the PS3 has internet access.

Web based interface may not mean it requires internet, and hopefully would not. The media server should be capable of hosting up its own webpage for web-based interfacing. I may try Orb 2.0...we'll see, the point was to just throw some things up and be done with it, but I knew better. |
