| Audio within a college network
Hello,
I'm not sure if this is the right place for this question, but I'll give it a shot.
I'm a college student and work in our A/V department. We are trying to determine an easy (and cheap) way to basically remote monitor the output of our mixing board. The output from the board can be either an xlr or a 1/4" plug, and we could convert it to other formats (mini, rca etc.). It is not an option run some sort of line from the board to our office, as it is too far (though within the same building). We have access to the school's network via a nearby ethernet port. So is there an easy way to simply stream this audio to a specific location on the network (but not necessarily on the internet)?
Thanks, and if anything was unclear, feel free to ask. |

Well, not exactly, I the idea is we want to be able to monitor in real time (aside from whatever immediate streaming delay there may be) in our office, what is going through the sound system in our production facility. Thanks though. from what i could tell that didnt have the option to run a live podcast. I may have just missed it though. If so, please let me know. Thanks for the reply |

How far apart are your office and production facilities? |

You do have access to a computer that it could be plugged into, right?

yes EX, we can have a computer right near the sound board, and we also have one in the office.
and Bonehead, the office and the facility are approximately 200 yds apart (i think)
, tho they are still in the same building. |

Alright, a bit of searching brought up this tutorial: Streaming Audio over the LAN/Intranet
You should be able to hook the output from your board to the PC's mic input using an adapter. Keep the output volume for that line as low as possible so you don't damage the sound card in it. |

Great find EX.... I would only add that the line in on the S/C might be a better choice. If you are going to use the mic input, be sure the +20db box is un-checked in Audio properties if you are using XP, or in Vista, keep the line level at about 75%... Also, if yer S/C will support it, use a 24bit 96Khz record setting. You want the highest Q
you can get on the input side.... |

Shoutcast DNAS is more about public streaming. It will probably work, but it is kind of overkill for a basic audio relay across as LAN.
VLC should do want you want with a single application. Setup VLC for stream serving on the input computer, then point VLC on the listening computer to the stream server. Documentation:Streaming HowTo - VideoLAN Wiki
