I think you meant, it's not unless you have a good set of earphones (and ears, of course).

As I described, I play through a hi-end system and own iPods. But I would like to use lossless formats but I don't think iPods accept them.

Apple offers a lossless format. It is supported by iPods, iTunes, and QuickTime. Decoding is even supported by libavcodec. More info:

I got around to ripping from CD to the Apple lossless using iTunes. It was easy and produced the desired result. The files are BIG though. There's no free lunch. If you don't want compression, the files are big.
