Headphones and SPDIF Digtal Output

I had an AMD5600 with EVGA nForce 590 MB that was hooked up to Headphones or my surround sound receiver via SPDIF depending what room I was in(yes i know this sounds weird ) The motherboard crashed and upgraded to the i7 processor and Asus P6T MB, which btw was a great investment But the only way I can switch to headphones or receiver is to unplug the one I am not using. I was using WinXP SP3 with the old setup but running Win7 now. Both onboard audio is made by Realtek. So in short, has anyone else have experience or troubles having both headphones and digital output? Thanks in advance for your time.
