Did you try uninstall all the sound devices that you can in device manager and restart?
Edit: System Restore does the whole system, including drivers. I've used it just recently to restore video drivers.
But the sound would have to be working at the time the system restore point was created.
If you have an OEM disk from another computer there is a good chance it will work with the License attached to the laptop, problem is you have to run the installation program before you will know
