Uninstall Default Device
I resently put a modem in my computer (XP PRO) so I could fax things, but right after I started having problems with sound in certain applications. I uninstalled the modem and removed it from my computer, but it's still showing up as a sound playback device in my control panels and I'm still having problems. Any ideas?

I think system restore would be a last resort.

System Restore only rolls back your system to an earlier date, why would it be the Last thing you try?

The last thing would be a format and a reinstall, wouldn't it?Hard Sayin Not Knowin

You're right I was thinking reinstall, but I don't have a system restore partition anyway

Not a partition, but a restore point saved by Windows, unless it was turned off.
It is on by default.
Go to Start, Programs,Accessories, System Tools, System Restore.Hard Sayin Not Knowin

That actually brings up a good point. I've seen a few Windows tweak sites that say turn off SR. After a few bad experiences with that, I no longer keep it entirely off. What I do instead is crank the size of the restore file to minimum on the recovery partition, leave it normal size on the partition I use for surfing, crank it up a few notches on my DAW drive, and turn it off on my external USB HD, which is only used for archives...
