Divx for vob to mkv

I've used nero 7 for years, but it wont work on my new Windows 7 computer. I don't want to buy nero 9. I'm looking for the best freeware solution to convert individual songs from unprotected concert DVD's to a smaller file to play on a HTPC. I have tried Handbrake allready. I'm looking for advice on the best converter and file format before I convert my concert collection. I'm also considering Divx 7.

The best compression format for video is H.264 - depending on the wrapper, it may come in mp4 or xvid format, or even packaged as .mkv. MPEG Streamclip is one free software that does a good job, so does the xvid codec used in your choice of converter (VirtualDub for example).
