Laptop - HDTV Connection Using HDMI Cable

    Hi all,

For a year / two now I've been connecting my laptop to my tv through a single hdmi cable and it's worked perfectly. However yesterday my HDMI cable connector broke so I had to get a new one.

This new cable displays the screen (it's on extended desktop from laptop main screen) with the background image, but everything is red. The whole screen is flickering relatively quickly and there are horizontal black lines on the left that change in size with the resolution, spanning from top to bottom.

I did not change anything since my last cable so I presumed that the cable was faulty, however after trying a friends it resulted in the same outcome.

Also strangely my last cable setup required no audio connection to the laptop, speakers, headphones etc or the tv screen would flicker, which wasnt a real problem. However to display this red screen it requires some audio input in the audio jack, else I get a blank black screen.

I am running a dual core laptop, 4GB(3GB), GeForce G8600M GS, Windows 7 Professional 32bit. The TV is made by Easy Touch.

I have tried most common solutions, tried installing Realtek audio manager drivers to see if it wasn't something to do with the audio, which does not go through to the tv now. I have installed the latest nVidia drivers also. I think the audio options in 'Sound' aren't correct as I have Speakers and Digital Audio (S/PDIF) and nothing saying HDMI.

I'd really appreciate any comments / thoughts as because it was working but now I'm having these problems.

    Many thanks

Is it an HDMI 1.0 or HDMI 1.3 cable? (1.3 is higher voltage.)
    What was your last?

I did not change anything since my last cable so I presumed that the cable was faulty, however after trying a friends it resulted in the same outcome.
Not clear. The new cable causes same problem on friend's HDTV?

Did you change to WIN7pro 32-bit recently?

Sorry no same laptop, same tv. I borrowed a friends HDMI cable (all 3 have been different brand HDMI cables) and tested it on my same laptop and tv.

I have upgraded to windows 7 within the last few months, but the extended desktop was working before and after the upgrade.

Update: When I set the connection to HDMI - HDTV (Audio disabled) I can get the TV to display as a second module with no flickering, and ofcourse no sound. However there is still a red overlay.

By overlay I mean the background is red instead of black, and any images / windows all have a red film overaly over them.

This is again true with two different HDMI cables tested on both of the TV's HDMI ports. I have very basically attempted to clean the HDMI port on my laptop but it seems clear, and could not have accumulated that much dirt in the hours between my original HDMI cable breaking and the new one being tried.
